Cataloging and Metadata Services (CAMS) is one of the departments in the Collections & Content portfolio of the University of Washington Libraries. CAMS has 29 members: 18 classified staff and 11 librarians organized in four units. The Libraries uses OCLC’s cataloging and metadata services, a consortial implementation of the Alma library management system, and the Primo discovery service. CAMS catalogs monographs, serials, and integrating resources in all formats and subjects and in numerous languages according to national cataloging standards. CAMS also plays the leading role in setting UW Libraries cataloging policy in conjunction with other units. It provides subject analysis and authority work for digital collections and electronic theses and dissertations on multiple platforms. It leads the development of non-MARC metadata standards and applications within the Libraries, and offers various metadata services across campus as needed. CAMS also assumes local responsibility for the Resource Management module of the Alma shared library management system. UW Libraries is active in all four programs of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (BIBCO, CONSER, NACO, and SACO), and has consistently been one of the largest contributors of new LC subject, genre/form, and demographic group authority records. CAMS staff are active in national library organizations such as ALA, OLAC, MLA, and the Program for Cooperative Cataloging, as well as the regional Orbis Cascade Alliance. The University of Washington Libraries seeks an enthusiastic and proactive E-Resources Metadata Librarian to develop and manage sustainable workflows for providing metadata both individually and at scale for monographic and integrating electronic resources. Collaborates within and outside the department to lead metadata creation and enrichment projects within multiple repositories and systems. This position reports to the Head of Metadata and Cataloging Initiatives Unit. The successful candidate will have the ability to thrive in an exciting, fluid, future-oriented Libraries environment, and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities. This is a full-time position with a flexible start date.



  • Performs descriptive, subject, and genre/form cataloging and classification using RDA: Resource Description & Access, LC-PCC Policy Statements and Program for Cooperative Cataloging guidelines, Library of Congress classification, Library of Congress subject headings and genre/form terms, and OCLC MARC tagging, in accordance with local policies. May contribute headings to the national authority file through NACO and SACO; may participate in BIBCO by contributing PCC records to OCLC. May serve as a cataloging liaison between the department and selected library units.
  • Coordinates and distributes requests to provide metadata for electronic and digitized resources.
  • Develops, implements, and manages workflows for creating electronic resource metadata.
  • Evaluates monographic and integrating e-resource metadata from vendors, library systems, and other sources (e.g. knowedgebases) to determine the most suitable metadata for user access.
  • Performs cataloging and metadata work at scale, employing automation and batch processes to load, manipulate, remediate, and enhance metadata.
  • Leads metadata creation and enrichment projects, identifying, adapting, harvesting, or manipulating existing metadata to aid in user discovery of information resources.
  • In consultation with other staff in CAMS, contributes to the ongoing development and management of CAMS Staffweb pages and other documentation.
  • Pursues opportunities for professional growth aligned with position responsibilities, and professional interests and goals. Follows trends in the profession and continually updates knowledge of issues and current developments as they relate to the position.
  • Contributes to the UW Libraries and the profession through productive service in professional associations, consortial activities, and University Libraries committees and task forces, as appropriate.



$53,000 minimum. Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and background.

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan on a matching basis. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax. This is a full time, 12-month appointment.



While we hope to fill the position by Spring 2020 we are happy to work with the successful candidate to explore opportunities for an earlier or later start date.



  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  • Experience creating metadata using current and emerging metadata standards, controlled vocabularies, and other cataloging standards and tools such as RDA, LCSH, LCC classification, MARC 21, and Dublin Core.
  • Knowledge of batch loading and/or manipulation of metadata using Microsoft Excel, MarcEdit, or other data management software.
  • Knowledge of current trends and developments in providing and managing metadata for electronic and digital resources.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
  • Evidence of the ability to work with others in a demanding and rapidly changing environment where consultation, collaboration, and cooperation are valued and essential.
  • Evidence of excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.


  • Experience using OCLC’s cataloging and metadata services and Alma library management system Resource Management functions.
  • Experience with metadata transformation tools or scripting languages for data manipulation (XSLT, OpenRefine, Python, Ruby, shell scripting, etc.).
  • Experience creating records for Program for Cooperative Cataloging programs (NACO, SACO, BIBCO).
  • Experience managing projects.
