The University of Washington (UW) Department of Radiation Oncology and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) are seeking a staff physician who will serve as Chief of Service for Radiation Oncology within the Hospital and Specialty Medicine Service.  The patient population ranges from young adult to geriatrics.  The Chief will plan and set goals for managing each Veteran's medical need.  This position will contribute to clinical program growth as well as educational, scientific and outreach efforts relating to these programs.

The selected candidate will be proposed for appointment to the full-time faculty at the University of Washington on either the physician-scientist or clinician-educator pathway as Associate Professor (0112) or Professor (0111) without tenure due to funding with an anticipated start date of 7/1/20.  Startup funds as well as laboratory space and support will be available for suitable physician-scientist candidates.  This is a full-time position with a twelve month appointment with salary paid over twelve months for eleven months of service.  Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

The Chief is responsible for participating in and/or managing all aspects of the Radiation Oncology program, to include clinical, administrative, academic, and research components; management of patient care load within available staffing, to include physicians, consultants and attendings, physician assistants/nurse practitioners and residents; and coordinate resident academic activities with the affiliate department at the University of Washington.

The Chief will provide medical treatment in both the outpatient clinic and inpatient clinical services. The Chief will work with multiple divisions/services throughout the facility to improve outcomes and efficiencies by collaborating with nursing and others to facilitate the operations of radiation oncology to meet common goals. The Chief is responsible for the structure and details of physician rounding schedules, and nighttime coverage systems relevant to the care of the patient. He/she will ensure providers, including staff, consultants, contractors, attendings, have met facility and VA requirements for privileging, security clearance, computer training and appointment prior to taking call or providing. The Chief will perform components of administrative management, participate in conferences and supervise/train physician assistants, residents and medical student trainees.

Department Overview:

The Department of Radiation Oncology treats over 2,800 patients yearly from a multi-state region (WWAMI) covering over 25% of the U.S. geographic area. The VAPSHCS treats about 400 patients annually.  The University of Washington has the only Radiation Oncology Department in North America that has clinical particle beam delivery systems for both proton and neutron therapy.  Our clinical approach is collaborative with numerous multidisciplinary clinics and tumor boards. We enjoy strong collaborations with the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and several imaging research laboratories.  The Department has 24 physicians, 8 advanced practice providers, 22 physics and 2 research faculty, who engage in active multi-disciplinary clinical and basic research.  Educational opportunities in our residency programs, fellowship programs and post-doctoral fellowships abound. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The successful applicant will be expected to engage in research and education, and to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Applicants must prove successful completion of an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education or American Osteopathic Association approved post-graduate residence in Medicine or Equivalent.  They must possess an MD degree or foreign equivalent.  Applicants must also be board-certified (or board- eligible if within one year of completion of fellowship) in radiation oncology. Any U.S. citizen may apply. Non- citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.  In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
