Position Description

The University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Surgery’s WWAMI Institute for Simulation in Healthcare (WISH), is recruiting a candidate who has a doctoral degree, regional or national reputation for leading the development, implementation and evaluation of educational programs and projects designed to promote the highest quality education for learners. This is a full-time, 12-month service period, non-tenured, research track position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor or Research Associate Professor for an initial term of three years. The salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience, with an expected start date in spring 2020.

This position will function independently and collaboratively write and successfully compete for extramural funding.  This position will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills, become a Principal Investigator, and direct interprofessional research teams.

This position will be involved in the full spectrum of educational innovations and strategic projects in WISH.  This position will propose and lead new initiatives and guide programs that have national and international significance.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

 

Responsibilities

  • Establishing a core area of research that is relevant to improving the safety, quality and efficiency of healthcare;
  • Leading small and large scale research studies from start to finish with assistance from Center research staff;
  • Assisting with the development and implementation of simulation and programmatic assessment, including the development of performance checklists with input from clinical content experts;
  • Disseminating findings at national conferences and through journal publications;
  • Implementing safety innovations in the applied setting through collaboration, both within and outside UW Medicine;
  • Serving as an internal expert in their respective research area to advise WISH;
  • Providing instructional lectures in their area of expertise to staff, students, practicing healthcare providers, and healthcare leaders;
  • Developing or implementing human performance research, investigation, or analysis protocols;
  • Designing cognitive aids, such as procedural storyboards or decision support systems;
  • Assessing the user-interface or usability characteristics of simulations;
  • Collecting data through direct observation of simulation activities or witnessing the conduct of tests;
  • Writing, reviewing, or commenting on documents, such as proposals, test plans, or procedures;
  • Training faculty in techniques or principles related to these activities;
  • Recommending changes to improve simulations, using knowledge of inadequate or harmful factors; and
  • Applying modeling or quantitative analysis to forecast events, such as human decisions or behaviors, the structure or processes of simulations, or the attitudes or actions of human groups.

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • PhD or foreign equivalent;
  • Background in in human factors engineering (or a closely related field such as Industrial & Systems Engineering, Cognitive Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, or Safety Engineering).
  • This position is open to candidates from different domains (e.g. aviation, defense, etc.) who are passionate about applying human factors and system safety methods to healthcare.
