Overview: The Fuller Lab is accepting applications for a highly motivated postdoctoral research fellow interested in vaccine research. You will lead a project to investigate immune mechanisms of protection afforded by a universal influenza vaccine and apply that knowledge to optimize the vaccine for immunogenicity and efficacy in mice and preclinical ferret and nonhuman primate models of influenza infection. You will have the opportunity to gain valuable skills in translational vaccine research and to build a robust network with other members in the lab and with multiple labs and PIs in academia and biotech. We are seeking an applicant with a strong foundation of basic research in immunology, virology, pathology or microbiology who is interested in applying their training toward translational vaccine research. The Fuller lab is focused on nucleic acid vaccine technologies including DNA and RNA vaccines for the prevention or therapy of viral infections and cancers including the development of novel vaccine delivery technologies, immunogen and adjuvant discovery, strategies to induce mucosal immunity and defining immune mechanisms of protection or cure.

The University of Washington and the International Union, Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, Local 4121 (UAW 4121) currently are negotiating their first collective bargaining agreement for Postdoctoral Scholars. Duration: This is a full-time position with a 12 months service period with the title of Senior Fellow, with the possibility for yearly renewal dependent upon performance and continued funding. Postdoctoral researchers in Dr. Fuller’s lab are encouraged and supported in their efforts to obtain individual funding and to develop an independent career track.

Mentorship and environment: Dr. Fuller is committed to training the next generation of scientists and providing post-docs with opportunities to expand their scientific techniques and creativity and to develop leadership and grant writing skills. Post-docs trained in Dr. Fuller’s lab have gone on to successful careers in academia, biotech, pharma, nonprofit organizations, government and other organizations. Seattle is a rich scientific community with a highly collaborative environment and ample opportunity to participate in a wide range of seminars, symposia and workshops. The Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington is consistently ranked as one of the top 5 in the world and postdocs have numerous opportunities to network with not only faculty and scientists at UW but also several world class research institutes in the area including the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC), Seattle Children’s Hospital, Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI), Benaroya Research Institute, Paul Allen Institute, PATH, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and numerous research centers including the Washington National Primate Research Center (WaNPRC).



Experience desired: Candidates with experience and training in basic immunology, virology, vaccinology, microbiology or molecular biology and a strong interest in vaccine research are encouraged to apply.

Education/Years of experience:  Ph.D. in a related field + 0-3 years post-doctoral research experience


  • PhD in relevant field.
  • Willing to work with laboratory animals and in BSL/ABSL 2 and 3
  • Fluency in English.
  • Excellent organization, writing, presentation and communication skills
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Strong interest in vaccine research
