The University of Washington (UW) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBSci) is seeking candidates for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor (without tenure) to join the UW Maternal and Child Mental Health Program.  This is a full-time, 12-month service period position with an anticipated start date in July 2020. The position rank will be determined based on the candidate’s level of experience. The candidate will spend 50% time directing the UW Fetal Alcohol and Drug Unit (FADU), with the primary role being implementation of FADU’s Parent Child Assistance Program, and 50% time on other maternal mental health projects.

The Parent‐Child Assistance Program (PCAP) is an evidence‐informed home visitation case‐management intervention for pregnant and parenting mothers who have substance use disorders. Its goals are to help mothers address their substance abuse problems, build healthy families, and prevent future births of children exposed prenatally to alcohol and drugs.

The Maternal and Child Mental Health Program aims to improve mental health during pregnancy and postpartum by making screening and evidence-based mental health and substance use disorder treatments accessible to all women in need. We do this through innovative research on new models of healthcare delivery, training and workforce development, direct clinical care and consultation, and evidence-informed advocacy.

UW Psychiatry is widely known for its development of evidence-based collaborative care programs that improve access to mental health care for underserved populations in primary care, rural, and otherwise underserved settings throughout the world. The Department’s research has demonstrated that collaborative care programs in which psychiatrists and other mental health specialists collaborate effectively with primary care and other health care providers lead to better access to care, better health outcomes, and lower overall health care costs, achieving the ‘Triple Aim of Health Care Reform.’ The department’s research portfolio totals more than $40 million/year and covers a wide range of translational research from clinical neurosciences to clinical and health services research.

We seek new faculty to join, build on, or extend this substantial portfolio of work to new areas of clinical care, training, implementation and research relevant to maternal mental health and substance use disorders during pregnancy and postpartum.

Duties: As a faculty member in the UW Maternal Child Mental Health Program, the candidate will contribute 50% time to the clinical leadership and ongoing implementation of the Parent Child Assistance Program within the UW FADU.  PCAP has been funded by Washington State since 1997 to provide statewide community-based home visitation and case‐management intervention to pregnant and parenting mothers who have substance use disorders, and their families. The candidate will lead the experienced PCAP training and evaluation team at UW as per state contract and provide clinical consultation to clinical supervisors at the state PCAP sites. The candidate will partner in seeking grant funding to support research on topics or interventions adjunct to PCAP (e.g. maternal mental health, infant-mother attachment). The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) and contribute to FASD-related research, training and clinical consultation.

This position will provide mental health and substance use consultations to providers on the state funded Partnership Access Line for Moms (PAL for Moms). The position will also supervise trainees in perinatal psychiatry and addictions, and partner on philanthropic, federal and state funded grants focused on maternal mental health and substance use disorder research, clinical care, consultation, education and training. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

All candidates for this position must have an M.D. or Ph.D. in psychology or psychiatry (or foreign equivalent) and have completed a psychiatry residency or clinical psychology training, with expertise in addiction medicine. In order to be eligible for university sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. medical license examination (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
