The Department of Social Sciences (School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences) at the University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for part-time lecturer in History with an anticipated start date of December 16, 2026. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in teaching in a diverse and inclusive academic community.

 The successful candidate will join our faculty on a part-time; 33 – 66% FTE basis for a six-months during the academic year ( Dec 16- June 15).  Reappoinments are contingent upon instruction needs, performance and funding.  

The base salary range for this position will be $1,920 -  $3,841 per month at 33%- 66% FTE, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.   

The successful candidate will be expected to perform highly effective and inclusive teaching, using a variety of pedagogical techniques and technologies, in an urban-serving campus environment.

They will be prepared to teach courses serving students from majors including History; Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies (EGL); and Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE). The successful candidate will be expected to teach the first part of the U.S. History Survey (U.S. History to Reconstruction; THIST 200), an introduction to History Methods course (THIST 101), and advanced THIST courses in the candidate field that are listed in the catalogue (alt. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach THIST 444: History of the Northwest and THIST 445: History of Tacoma).

Instruction in other disciplines (such as Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies) may be possible, depending on candidate experience and department need.

The School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at UW Tacoma is comprised of three academic departments, among the seven schools that make up the UWT campus. The Social Sciences Department (SOCS) is the collection of studies to explore the social sciences and understand how human behavior, historical context, economic systems and power dynamics collectively shape society and have a profound impact on the world. Qualifications

Applicants for this instructional faculty position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

·       an earned Ph.D. or M.S. degree (or foreign equivalent) in a related field at the time of appointment.

·       demonstrated record of teaching effectiveness or a minum three - five years of experience in a relevant field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience teaching at higher ed institutions.

3.     A statement of teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness, including methods and high-impact practices you use (or intend to use) to support student learning for students from a variety of preparations and backgrounds, and examples of how you would incorporate these methods in the classroom. (3 page maximum) 

4.     Evidence of teaching effectiveness. This portfolio might include: sample syllabi, quantitative and/or qualitative student evaluations, and/or peer teaching evaluations. 

5.     Names and contact information for three professional references, with letters available upon request.
