The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine invites applications for a Spine Neurosurgeon to join our academic faculty.

This is a full-time appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor (without tenure due to reasons of funding) rank in either the Surgeon-Scientist Pathway or the Clinician-Educator Pathway. The position includes clinical responsibilities split between the University of Washington Academic Centers and the Veterans Affairs (VA) healthcare system, with an anticipated 50% UW and 50% VA distribution of clinical effort.

Assistant Professors are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1–June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July–June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The base salary for this position, paid through the University of Washington, will be $53,171–$57,077 per month ($638,052–$684,924 per year), commensurate with experience, discipline, and qualifications, or as may be mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Associate Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.  The base salary range for the Associate Professor title will be $63,713 - $67,894 per month ($764,556 to $ 814,728 per year).

The successful applicant’s primary responsibilities will include clinical care, teaching, and scholarly activity within the Department of Neurological Surgery, with clinical effort distributed across all UW platforms and the VA. The applicant will partner with departmental faculty to expand and advance the comprehensive spine program, including the care of complex spinal disorders across both clinical sites.

Scholarly expectations will be commensurate with the selected academic pathway:

  • Surgeon-Scientist Pathway: Faculty are expected to develop and sustain an active research program, including pursuit of independent external funding (federal and/or private).
  • Clinician-Educator Pathway: Faculty are expected to engage in scholarly activity such as clinical innovation, outcomes research, quality improvement, education, or other academically recognized contributions aligned with departmental priorities.

The Department of Neurological Surgery has a nationally recognized tradition of excellence in patient care, education, and research. Faculty are expected to engage in a broad range of academic activities, including clinical service, teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows, and participation in scholarly or research activities appropriate to their pathway.

Title, rank and salary are commensurate with experience. The anticipated start date of this appointment is July 1, 2026.

Salaries are benchmarked to the AAMC faculty compensation scale. Other compensation associated with this position may include a relocation incentive/moving allowance, administrative supplement, productivity incentive, and/or VA-specific compensation, as applicable and in accordance with institutional and federal policies.

 

Qualifications

    • Applicants must have an M.D. degree (or foreign equivalent).
    • Applicants must be eligible for a Washington State Medical License.
    • Applicants must be board certified or board eligible in Neurological Surgery.
    • In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the USMLE, or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
    • Applicants must meet VA credentialing and appointment requirements.
