Position Description
The Department of American Indian Studies (AIS) at the University of Washington is opening a call for applications for Lecturer Part-Time appointments for the 2026-27 academic year. We welcome applications from Indigenous scholars, educators, artists, and community leaders, and we encourage you to share this call widely with qualified candidates. We anticipate filling multiple positions.
Applicants may apply to teach for one, two, or multiple quarters in AY 2026-27. Successful applicants will submit a short proposal for each course they propose to teach.
We are prioritizing applicants with proposals to teach one (or more) of the following courses:
AIS 202: Contemporary Topics and Social Issues in American Indian Studies
AIS 270: Native Peoples of the Northwest Coast
AIS 335: American Indians and the Law
AIS 306: Contemporary Indigenous Environmental Issues
AIS 360: American Indians in Cinema
AIS 441: Gender in Native American Societies
AIS 443: Indigenous Films, Sovereign Visions
AIS 480: Indigenous Resistance and Resurgence Movements
AAS 300: US/Pacific Islander Contemporary Culture
Additional course proposals for other AIS courses and Special Topics courses will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Special consideration will be given to courses covering Pacific Northwest and/or Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander content and topics.

General Duties:
- Create a course syllabus
- Conduct class sessions, including presenting lectures and moderating discussions
- Manage the course Canvas site
- Administer and grade assignments (papers, homework, exams, etc.) and maintain grading records
- Manage and respond to course related student email
- Hold weekly office hours (in person or virtually)
Salary: Salary and benefits are competitive. Salary is commensurate with academic standing, qualifications, and experience. Salary range: $6900-$7300/month.
Service Period: Lecturers Part-time in the American Indian Studies Department have an annual service period of nine months (September 16 - June 15).
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree at minimum. Strong preference is given to applicants with:
- Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students effectively
- Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the course areas listed above (or other relevant AIS topics)
- A teaching approach that reflects Native/Indigenous values and respects Indigenous communities and knowledges
- Expertise developing course curriculum preferred (syllabi, assignments, learning objectives)
- Master's degree or equivalent training/experience (preferred, not required)
