Title: Postdoctoral Scholar - Institute for Nuclear Theory (@NDB Hub)

Position Details

Position Description

Postdoctoral Scholar – Institute for Nuclear Theory (@NDB Hub)

In 2024, the National Science Foundation inaugurated a Focused Research Hub in Theoretical Physics, "Advancing the Theory of Nuclear Double Beta-decay (@NDB)” (https://tarheels.live/atndb/). The @NDB Hub involves theoretical physicists and statisticians at the University of North Carolina, Colorado State University, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the University of Maryland, Miami University, Michigan State University, the University of Notre Dame, Ohio University, the University of Tennessee, the University of Washington (Institute for Nuclear Theory), and Washington University in St. Louis.

The @NDB Hub anticipates hiring a post-doctoral research fellow who will join the project in September 2026 and will contribute to @NDB research activities at the University of Washington in Seattle (UW) and the Washington University in St. Louis (WashU).  The fellow will be stationed at the UW (Institute for Nuclear Theory) and will have the opportunity to visit WashU for extended research stays.  Research at these @NDB sites focuses on various aspects of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay, including effective field theory methods to connect sources of Lepton Number Violation to nuclear transition operators, computation of relevant many-body LNV operators in light nuclei for benchmarking and uncertainty quantification purposes, and the broader phenomenology of Lepton Number Violation.  The successful candidate is expected to contribute to one or more of these efforts. Applicants should thus have a strong research record and display significant initiative to complement their research skills. @NDB fellows will have many opportunities to interact with theorists at the other institutions, including with statisticians to improve uncertainty quantification in theoretical research on double-beta decay.

Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time, 12-month appointments for a duration of two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year, subject to funding and performance.  The Postdoctoral Scholar title is limited to at most five years of postdoctoral experience(s) at both the UW and any prior institutions. The salary range for this position is $70,000 to $75,000 per year.

Postdoctoral Scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a PhD or foreign equivalent degree in nuclear theory, broadly defined, by the date of appointment.

Instructions

Applications should be submitted to Interfolio and include a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including a complete list of publications), statement of research interests (maximum two pages), and three letters of reference.  Review of applications will start on December 30, 2025 and will continue until the position is filled.

Inquiries should be directed to Vincenzo Cirigliano (cirigv@uw.edu),  Saori Pastore (saori@wustl.edu)  or  Jonathan Engel, the Hub director (engelj@physics.unc.edu).
