The University of Washington Department of Global Health (DGH), which bridges the Schools of Medicine (SOM) and Public Health (SPH), invites applications for one faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor to join the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh). This is a full-time, 100% FTE, 12-month service period position, with an anticipated start date of summer 2026. This is a non-tenured position. The base salary range for this position will be $9,766-$12,750 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include start-up funds, lump sum moving allowance, and/or a relocation incentive.

The Department values equitable compensation among its faculty and follows established faculty compensation guidelines. All faculty, particularly on the professional tracks such as this position, are expected to engage in substantial and substantive externally-funded scholarly work. Base Salary Coverage (10%) facilitates that scholarship. Research faculty are expected to support the remaining 90% of position salary with grant or other external funding. The SPH Compensation Plan outlines the base salary coverage for Research track faculty. 

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to: 

  • Lead high-impact, innovative and collaborative research in the field of maternal/child health, pediatric HIV, and neurodevelopment and biological aging among children and adolescents.
  • Provide research program leadership, uphold equitable research practices, and contribute to Global WACh, including writing and managing grant-funding research.
  • Collaborate with researchers, engage with broad network of community partners, and provide mentorship to trainees.
  • Actively promote inclusivity, mutual respect, welcoming and equal opportunity in the Department and specifically Global WACh.
  • Communicate their research findings effectively to a variety of audiences, including other researchers, policy makers and the public. 

As a member of the Department of Global Health, the candidate would be expected to regularly participate in Departmental activities such as mentoring, seminar participation or guest speaking, orientation(s), program and department faculty meetings, graduation ceremonies, search committees, conducting research, and other relevant academic activities in the Department. Teaching of courses is not an expectation of the research professorial track. Mentoring graduate students is an expectation of this research track. These include supervision of student research projects related or unrelated to their thesis or dissertation, supervision of practicum or fieldwork placements.

Environment

The Department of Global Health’s major research, educational, and capacity-building programs focus on a broad range of health issues, including several with strong, synergistic links to woman, adolescent, and child health; HIV and other infectious diseases; mental health; injury and violence prevention; drug safety; health metrics; and health systems strengthening and program delivery.  The department’s research programs range from interdisciplinary laboratory-based investigation through multi-center clinical trials, metrics development, program evaluation and implementation science.    

The position will sit in the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh), a University-chartered Center that is home to 12 full-time and 8 affiliate faculty, 30 staff, 4 postdoctoral scholar and 6 student research assistants working towards our mission to make scientific discoveries, cultivate leaders, and bridge disciplines to advance the tightly connected health and well-being of women, adolescents and children. Global WACh brings together expertise in maternal health from the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, neonatal, child, and adolescent health expertise from the Department of Pediatrics, and vast experience working in infectious disease, health metrics and evaluation, education, clinical research, and service delivery within the Department of Global Health. These disciplines combine under a methodology that views women, children, and adolescents as three populations interconnected along a shared life course. Global WACh is home to over 40 grants that span clinical research, observational trials, infectious disease, program evaluation, education and training, and service delivery within the Department of Global Health.

The UW and the DGH have developed specific programs to support new faculty in all areas of their research, teaching, and service development. Qualifications

Applicants must have: 

  • A doctoral degree in Epidemiology, public health, or related field (or foreign equivalent) AND/OR a clinical degree such as MD, MBBS, MBChB, or MMed (or foreign equivalent) with a Masters in Epidemiology or Public Health;
  • A record of high-quality, innovative and impactful research in maternal/child health with a focus on pediatric and adolescent HIV prevention and treatment, and experience with community-engaged research in LMICs;
  • Expertise in longitudinal epidemiologic models, molecular epidemiology, and other advanced epidemiology methods;
  • Demonstrated record of promoting inclusivity, mutual respect, welcoming and equal opportunity;
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully secure grants and publish scientific findings.
