Position Description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine is recruiting a full-time (1.0 FTE) Associate Professor or Full Professor of Clinical Practice who will specialize in Interventional Pulmonology (IP). Patient care efforts will occur at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) Montlake and Northwest Campuses, Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and at Fred Hutch Cancer Center (FHCC). Rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. 

We are seeking an Interventional Pulmonologist to develop and lead a new IP service for UW Medicine. The Director of Interventional Pulmonology will have a strong clinical presence engaging in advanced bronchoscopy, pleural interventions, and other aspects of IP medicine.  This new service will partner with thoracic surgery in the diagnosis and staging of lung cancer, management of complex pleural disease, therapeutic airway interventions, and interventional support of various thoracic and pulmonary conditions.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with hospital and departmental leaders to create an Interventional Pulmonology (IP) program including rigid bronchoscopy, robotic bronchoscopy and pleural-based procedures.
  • Establish a multi-disciplinary model of care for all patients cared for by the IP service.
  • Develop partnership and collaborative care model with thoracic surgery for interventional bronchoscopy and pleural procedures, including shared training of pulmonary fellows and thoracic residents.
  • Partner with leaders at Fred Hutch Cancer Care (FHCC) to establish effective and efficient diagnostic and therapeutic interventions for patients with malignancy.
  • Collaborate with the Lung Transplant Program on both surveillance and therapeutic interventions.
  • Develop a system-wide model of care through coordination of IP services across FHCC, University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC), and Harborview Medical Center (HMC).
  • Develop referral processes and increase the reach of the IP services beyond Seattle to the WWAMI region and expand procedural capacity to support this growth.
  • Establish and monitor quality and safety metrics for the IP service in collaboration with leaders from anesthesia, thoracic surgery, thoracic oncology and others.
  • Establish best practices for cost-effective care.
  • Standardize various procedures, equipment and workflows to efficiently manage the flow of patients in all phases of pre, intra and post procedure care.
  • Develop educational objectives for pulmonary fellows and thoracic surgery residents/fellows who participate in IP procedures and participate in the education of PCCSM fellows as well as surgical residents and fellows.
  • Recruit additional members of the IP service as the program grows.
  • Oversee programmatic outreach and be responsible for building and coordinating IP across all UW sites.
  • Participate in outpatient clinics at both FHCC and UWMC.
  • Block bronchoscopy suite time at UWMC and FHCC.
  • Perform flexible, robotic, and rigid bronchoscopy.
  • Perform pleural interventions including pleuroscopy.
  • Participate in procedures for inpatient consultation in collaboration with the Pulmonary Consult services at UWMC; occasional support to team at HMC.
  • Identify and integrate innovative tools, technologies, and approaches to enhance patient care.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in teaching, scholarship, or service which is considered integral to Clinical Practice positions. This position will include clinical bedside teaching of medical students, residents and fellows. The initial appointment period will be three years, at a minimum, with eligibility for renewal thereafter. Faculty on the clinical practice track hold multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1–June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July–June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Clinical Practice track appointments are not eligible for tenure.

The anticipated start date of this position is January 2026 or later.

University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

The full-time base salary range for this position at the associate professor rank will be $23,000–$28,000 per month ($276,000–$336,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The full-time base salary range for this position at the professor rank will be $31,250–$37,500 per month ($375,000–$425,004 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. These ranges are inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations.

Additional administrative responsibilities may be offered to a specific candidate with appropriate experience and qualifications which may result in an administrative supplement (ADS).

Qualifications

Applicants must have a medical degree (MD/DO) or foreign equivalent and AABIP and/or ACGME accredited Interventional Pulmonary fellowship or foreign equivalent. Applicants must be board certified (or foreign equivalent) in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and have a Diplomate of the AABIP. Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Washington.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
