The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (PBSCI) at the University of Washington is seeking a qualified individual to serve as Director of the Division of Addictions. The position may be supported, in part, by an endowment from the Nicole K. Engle Endowed Professorship for Addiction Medicine funded by the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions (GIBHS) pending approval of the Dean of the School of Medicine and the UW Board of Regents. If awarded, the endowed professorship will be an initial five-year appointment which is renewable at the discretion of the School of Medicine Dean (at the recommendation of the PBSCI Chair).
JOB SUMMARY AND STRUCTURE
The holder of this senior leadership role will be charged with providing leadership for an exceptional clinical, educational, and translational research program focused on improving the lives of individuals and families affected by substance use disorders, adapting or developing preventive or therapeutic approaches and solutions for individuals and families struggling with addiction problems, and facilitating productive collaboration among a diverse group of addiction researchers, clinicians, educators and policy makers who collectively make up the department’s Division of Addictions. The holder of this position is expected to make significant contributions to teaching and research in this field and to support and facilitate impactful contributions and collaboration of their colleagues.
We are looking for one full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor without tenure by reason of funding in either the clinician-teacher or faculty-scientist pathway. Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research/scholarship, and service.
This position will report to the Chair of PBSCI. Rank will be determined commensurate with experience and qualifications. The anticipated start date is September 1, 2025. Priority Review date as of July 1, 2025.
Division of Addictions
The Division of Addictions in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington is a collection of faculty members and staff housed in various Institutes, Centers, Programs and Labs with a broad range of expertise in Substance Use and Addiction Psychiatry. Faculty provide excellent behavioral health care and engage in innovative research, education and policy work. They have expertise across the entire age spectrum and in all areas -- including alcohol and opioid use disorders, publish in leading journals, pre-clinical and clinical research, serve on key editorial boards and research committees, and edit leading addictions reference texts in the field. Some of the areas of excellence include college and early age drinking, treatment trials for substance use disorders, integrated models of addiction and co-occurring mental illnesses, opioid and other medication-assisted treatment, studies in the neuroscience of addictions and the use of novel therapeutics in addiction psychiatry. JOB DUTIES
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Providing national [regional] leadership in the field of Addiction Psychiatry
- Implementing or scaling evidence-based interventions for substance use (e.g. adapting interventions to address cultural or other barriers to implementation).
- Engaging in a broad range of approaches that can be used to help individuals and families struggling with addiction problems across the translational spectrum, from basic science to policy.
- Fostering connections among a varied and dispersed group of faculty, staff, and community collaborators to facilitate collaboration, promote opportunities, share resources, champion inclusion and inspire innovation.
- Support the training and mentorship of trainees and junior faculty in Substance Use and Addiction Psychiatry and demonstrated ability to foster the success of others.
- Support the Department's commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism as a guiding principle.
- Provide leadership for faculty, staff and trainees who affiliate themselves with the Division of Addictions by facilitating productive connections and collaborations.
- Develop and support an exceptional translational research program focused on adapting or developing preventive or therapeutic approaches and solutions for individuals and families struggling with addiction problems.
- Help run the Psychiatry Residency Training Program’s addictions track, the only program of its kind in the country
- Work closely with PBSCI leadership on strategic initiatives related to the department’s addictions research and training portfolio.
- Provide mentorship to junior Division faculty.
- Represent Division faculty and staff at PBSCI Leadership Council meetings.
- Perform other academic leadership duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

SALARY
The base salary range for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
The base salary range for someone with an MD/DO for an Associate Professor position will be $19,834 - $23,334 monthly ($238,008 - $280,008 annually)
The base salary range for someone with a PhD/PsyD for an Associate Professor position will be $10,417 - $13,750 monthly ($125,004 - $165,00 annually)
The base salary range for someone with an MD/DO for a Professor position will be $20,834 - $26,250 monthly ($250,008 - $315,000 annually)
The base salary range for someone with a PhD/PsyD for a Professor position will be $13,750 - $20,000 monthly ($165,000 - $240,000 annually)
Other compensation associated with this position may include a temporary salary supplement, administrative salary supplement (ADS) and/or incentive through UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan.
Qualifications
- An MD/DO, PhD or PsyD, (or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field.
- An established translational research portfolio in Addiction Psychiatry
- Track record of NIH funding, including but not limited to grants at rank (e.g. U19, P30, etc.)
In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
