Position Description

  • The Senior Associate Dean for Rural and Regional Affairs is accountable directly to the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs with responsibilities including, but not limited to:

    Leadership, oversight and coordination of rural academic programs at the UW School of Medicine.  These include RUOP, WRITE and TRUST.

  • Leadership, oversight and coordination of the WWAMI Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Title VII HRSA grant and the activities of the WWAMI AHEC Program Office including coordination with the WWAMI AHEC centers across Washington and close working relationships with the Alaska AHEC Program office, Idaho AHEC Program office and the Montana AHEC Program Office.
  • Work closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in support of all medical student education programs conducted across WWAMI while advising the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs about the direction of and needs across WWAMI. The Senior Associate Dean provides primary supervision of the regional Assistant Clinical Deans who oversee Patient Care and Explore and Focus Phases for second, third and fourth year medical students and programmatic supervision of the Assistant Deans, Foundations Phase, at partner institutions with Foundations Phase medical students;
  • Develop relationships with regional and rural health systems, hospitals and practices as potential training sites for UW School of Medicine students and residents. 
  • Work closely with the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs, the Associate Dean for Curriculum and the Associate Dean for Educational Quality Improvement regarding policy development, maintenance and implementation related to regional and rural programs, including serving as the delegate of the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs in working with the regional assistant deans as needed;
  • Work closely with the Associate Dean for Curriculum, Vice Dean for Faculty Affairs and Director of the Center for Leadership and Innovation in Medical Education to plan and implement a faculty development program that meets the needs of the region related to all aspects of medical student education;
  • Work closely with the UW Medicine Senior Director of External Relations and UW Director of Federal Relations to advance local, state and federal relations on behalf of the WWAMI program;
  • Work closely with the Vice Dean for Graduate Medical Education and DIO and the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs to advance graduate medical education throughout the WWAMI region;
  • Work closely with the Vice Dean for Research and Graduate Education and regional assistant deans for the WWAMI states to facilitate research collaborations between the partner universities and the UW School of Medicine;
  • Work closely with the Vice Dean for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and regional assistant deans for activities related to EDI across the WWAMI region;
  • Upon request, represent the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs in University and external meetings and discussions; and
  • Other administrative assignments as requested by the Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs. 

Faculty Appointment:

This position is a full-time or part-time position that will have a faculty appointment in one of the UWSOM departments appropriate for background and experience. The administrative role is a 0.80 FTE position.  This position is not eligible for tenure. This is a 12-month service period position (July – June) with an anticipated start date in Summer 2025. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. It is expected that the physician who fills this role will continue to be active in the medical community in the WWAMI region.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position will be $250,000 - $500,004 per year, commensurate with experience and qualifications and based on the individual’s specialty or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include administrative salary supplement and allowances.

Location:

This position will require extensive travel and presence across the WWAMI region.

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

Requires a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathy degree with graduate training and board certification in a medical or surgical specialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The physician must meet the requirements for a full and unrestricted medical license in a WWAMI state and must meet the requirements for appointment to the faculty. Additionally, rural practice, medical student education, and administration of educational programs is strongly preferred.  

Work Experience Requirements:

A minimum of five years of clinical practice is preferred with some of this experience having occurred in a WWAMI state.  Past experience must include active participation in medical education and experience in administration, with administration in medical education and rural programs being preferred.  Education, training and experience in a primary care field of medicine are preferred.  Prior experience and involvement with the WWAMI program is preferred.  Prior involvement in a leadership role in the local or state medical association or local or state specialty specific organization (organized medicine) in a WWAMI state is preferred.
