Position Details
Position Description
Postdoctoral Scholar - University of Washington Nuclear Theory Group
The Nuclear Theory Group at the University of Washington (UW) anticipates filling one full-time postdoctoral scholar position to start in September 2025. Outstanding candidates with a PhD in nuclear theory, broadly defined, are invited to apply. This position is a full-time, 12-month (one-year) appointment which may be extended --upon successful performance and continuing funding-- up to a maximum term of three years.
The Theoretical Nuclear Physics Group (NTG) consists of three faculty members, S.R. Beane, A. Bulgac, and G.A. Miller, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students. Current NTG research interests include quantum many-body theory and effective field theory methods with applications in nuclear and atomic theory, nuclear reactions at high and low energies, and aspects of nuclear theory relevant for neutron star physics and multi-messenger astrophysics. Group members are also interested in aspects of quantum information science (QIS) and Machine Learning (ML) with applications in the physics of QCD and other fundamental systems. An area of special interest to the group at present is ML applications in the study of quantum many-body systems. For further information about the group, see the NTG homepage.
The UW is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The salary range for this position is $6498-$7500 per month, commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications, education, and experience and considered in the context of the NTG peer group, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.
Qualifications
The successful applicant should have a PhD (or foreign equivalent) in theoretical nuclear physics, or a closely related field, by date of appointment.
Instructions
Applications should include a CV with list of publications, a research statement, a statement describing the applicant's experience and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and three reference letters from senior physicists.
Applications received by December 13, 2024, will receive first consideration. The position will remain open until filled.
Any questions may be directed to Professor Silas R Beane: silas@uw.edu. Note that the Nuclear Theory Group is completely distinct from the Institute for Nuclear Theory and the InQubator for Quantum Simulation and therefore submitting to one will not lead to consideration by the others.
