The Department of Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing in the School of Nursing (CFPHN) at the University of Washington (UW)-Seattle Campus invites applications for the Department Chair appointment and Professor or Associate Professor (with tenure) position. The successful candidate will provide transformational leadership and vision, building upon departmental strengths, to co-create a departmental identity and mission that unifies and supports our collective work to promote wellness, social justice, and health equity in partnership with individuals, families, and communities across the U.S. and globally.  The Chair will lead and serve as an advocate for a group of talented and committed faculty, staff, and students of diverse backgrounds. The Chair will guide the work of teaching and research faculty who aim to educate and collaboratively generate knowledge to produce and support a world-class nursing workforce equipped to navigate and foster the conditions that support health and well-being.

 

The Department Chair is an administrative appointment with a primary position as a faculty member. The anticipated start date is in August 2025, to commence an initial five-year term as  Chair.  The successful candidate will be appointed with tenure at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor. The faculty position service period is 9 months (September 16-June 15 of each academic year), and the administrative appointment service period is equal to 12 months. During the academic year, 50% effort will be allocated to fulfill the administrative duties as Chair of CFPHN, with the other 50% allocated to faculty activities (teaching, research, and service). During the summer months (June 16-September 15) compensated administrative time (50% FTE) is provided to support the Department of CFPHN. The base salary range for the Associate Professor position is $12,750 - 13,500 per month ($114,750 - 121,500 annually); and for the Professor position it is $14,500-17,230 per month ($130,500-155,070 annually), commensurate with rank, experience, and qualifications. Other compensation associated with this position includes an administrative supplement (ADS) and may include a lump sum moving allowance and/or a relocation incentive.

UW Seattle School of Nursing Executive Dean (Dr. Hilaire Thompson) provides leadership of the Seattle, Bothell, and Tacoma (Tri-Campus) nursing programs and collaborates closely with the Bothell and Tacoma deans.

 

The Department of CFPHN is one of two departments in the UW School of Nursing, the other being the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Informatics.  The average annual new enrollment for the undergraduate (A/BSN) programs is approximately 200 students and about 140 students in the DNP, PhD, and other graduate programs and certificates. The department is home to 25 tenure-track faculty, 65 teaching faculty, 2 research track faculty, 5 active emeritus faculty, and 6 staff. The faculty lead in the fields of antiracism and equity in nursing, global health nursing, infant and early childhood mental health, and public/population health, and practice-based and community-engaged research.  CFPHN faculty lead the Barnard, Antiracism & Global Health Research Centers.

  • Demonstrate familiarity across the breadth of topics in child, family, and population health in both US and global settings.
  • Articulate a strong vision for the transdisciplinary fields of child, family, and population health.
  • Lead a team or organization toward a common vision using skills in respectful listening, collaborative decision-making, and building community internally and with program partners. This should include expertise in managing and leading change during uncertainty.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with strategic planning.
  • Work effectively with colleagues at all levels—including administration, faculty, staff, and students—to obtain, manage, and sustain necessary resources to meet team or organizational goals and objectives.   
  • Be involved in community engagement and/or social justice work to strengthen research collaborations and improve population health.
  • Advocate for resources for the Department amongst Deans and Chairs.

Qualifications

  • An earned doctorate (or foreign equivalent) in a field relevant to nursing science, health services, or public health. 
  • Academic leadership expertise
  • Demonstrated expertise in fostering a diverse,equitable, and inclusive environment for the social identities described with preference towards leadership in anti-racism efforts. 
  •  Demonstrated efforts in providing educational leadership, including classroom teaching, student mentoring, and community trainings with emphasis on using innovative pedagogy that centers equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and/or decolonizing principles. 
  • Record of successful contribution to the advancement of nursing education and practice through interdisciplinary and community partnerships and collaboration. 
  • Leadership expertise producing and supporting impactful, high-quality research, including obtaining extramural funding.  
  • Demonstrated expertise fostering impactful public and community health engagement with a wide variety of interest groups, such as government agencies, policymakers, employers, and community and clinical partners.
