Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the dxʷdəwʔabš (Duwamish people),the College of Education at the University of Washington is seeking an innovative and experienced educator to serve as an Assistant Teaching Professor and Program Director for our soon to be launched P-3 (Pre-Kindergarten through 3rd Grade) teaching certification programs. The new Program Director will support the final stages of development and university approval  with an anticipated launch date of autumn 2026 for the online program, followed by the on campus program in autumn 2027.  These programs are designed to prepare diverse and culturally responsive educators who will be equipped to meet the needs of young children in both early childhood and elementary education settings.

The position will carry the non-tenure rank of Assistant Teaching Professor and is a three- year, 9-month position at 100% FTE. Renewal of this appointment will be considered in the second year. The base salary range for this position will be $8,050 - $8,620 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a relocation incentive and a limited commitment of summer salary based on curricular and administrative need and available funding.

The successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of both the on-campus and online certification programs, contributing to curriculum development and teaching within the programs. As Director, the individual will be responsible for program administration, coordination with other certification programs in the college, faculty leadership, and student recruitment—particularly focused on attracting students from underrepresented and diverse backgrounds.

 

Key Responsibilities & Duties:

●      Program Leadership:

o   Support the final stages of development and university approval  with an anticipated launch date of autumn 2026 for the online program, followed by the on campus program in autumn 2027. 

o   Serve as the director for both new undergraduate P-3 certification programs

o   Oversee program administration, including curriculum development, assessment, and alignment with state and national teaching standards.

o   Collaborate with other certification programs and faculty within the College of Education to ensure coherence and coordination across programs.

o   Support and mentor faculty teaching within the P-3 program, fostering a collaborative and inclusive teaching environment.  Hire adjunct faculty as needed.

o   Report to and work in close collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Programs in the administration of these two undergraduate programs.

●      Teaching & Curriculum Development:

o   Teach 4-5 courses each academic year within the P-3 certification programs.

o   Lead the development of high-quality, inclusive, and culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogical practices that support diverse learners and families in early childhood education.

o   Incorporate a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion into all aspects of teaching and program development.

●      Recruitment & Retention:

o   Collaborate with the college’s admissions and recruitment team to actively recruit students, with an emphasis on attracting individuals from diverse racial, cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic backgrounds.

o   Build partnerships with local communities, Tribes, schools, and organizations to promote the P-3 programs and support student success.

●      Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI):

o   Actively promote and contribute to a college-wide commitment to DEI in all aspects of the P-3 program, including student recruitment, community partnerships, curriculum development, and teaching.

o   Create opportunities for students to engage in discussions and practices that address issues of social justice, anti-racism, tribal sovereignty, and equity in early childhood education.

●      Collaboration & Outreach:

o   Develop and maintain partnerships with local school districts, early learning centers, Tribal Nations, and community organizations to create opportunities for student internships, practicum placements, and collaborative projects.

o   Represent the P-3 program in university, regional, and national meetings, conferences, and initiatives.

Qualifications

 

The successful candidate must possess an earned doctorate or foreign equivalent in a relevant field or discipline by the date of the appointment, such as, but not limited to, early childhood education, early childhood special education, curriculum and instruction or education, and at least three years’ experience as a certificated teacher (e.g., P-3, birth-3rd grade, early childhood special education, etc.) in an early learning or elementary school and experience teaching in a teacher education program at the undergraduate or graduate level.
