The University of Washington School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the Vice Chair, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion in the University of Washington Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine (UW APM). This is an Associate- or Full-Professor-level clinical position (anesthesiology, critical care, pain medicine or pediatrics) with protected time for administrative duties and academic endeavors. This position will have a reporting line to the UW APM Chair and will work closely with all UW APM vice chairs, division chiefs and education program directors. This effort includes all clinical divisions within the department as well as trainees, administrative staff, and research faculty and staff.
The Vice Chair, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (VC-EDI) will oversee efforts to improve and maintain equity, diversity, and inclusion for UW APM, ensuring these efforts function consistently within the institutional and departmental stated vision, mission and values. The VC-EDI will work with the Chair and other departmental and institutional leaders to pursue four key goals: 1) champion UW APM’s EDI activities and serve as the chief departmental advocate for innovation, improvement and investment in these activities; 2) define, develop, and enable a long-term strategic direction for the departmental EDI programs, including defining our EDI mission and vision and leading our EDI council; 3) actively contribute to equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts in the broader School, University, and clinical institutions; and 4) foster a welcoming and inclusive department culture that promotes excellence in all EDI initiatives.
Positive factors for consideration include but are not limited to strong organizational skills and the ability to positively and proactively collaborate with other departmental leaders. Additionally, other positive factors include but are not limited to building cultural awareness and responsiveness, exercising emotional intelligence, building trust and credibility, and collaborating with a wide variety of interested parties to achieve operational goals. About the UW Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine
The UW School of Medicine has an outstanding national reputation for teaching, clinical service and research. Likewise, the UW Department of Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, founded in 1960 by Dr. John Bonica, is ranked among the leading academic departments in the country. With 245 clinical and research faculty members, 90 staff members, and 115 affiliated clinical faculty, we are one of the largest departments in the UW School of Medicine. Our education program oversees 112 residents (the School of Medicine’s second largest residency program) and 38 postdoctoral scholars and ACGME fellows.
Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Activities: Rooted in principles of health equity, our Diversity Council, Associate Council members, and all members of our department work together to develop data-driven and collaborative initiatives in patient care, education, and research. Within these departmental missions, we have focused our efforts in the core areas of educational development for medical students and residents, the expansion of pipeline programs, and internal policy and program development with a focus on long-term sustainability.
Educational Activities: Our residency program features five different training opportunities – including the Bonica Scholars Program, which incorporates research training that optimally continues into a T32 fellowship – across eight hospital sites. Our fellowship program offers a wide variety of clinical and research training opportunities in all four ACGME-accredited subspecialty areas as well as eight innovative non-ACGME-accredited subspecialty areas. UW APM also maintains an active medical student clerkship program in both anesthesiology and pain medicine.
Clinical Activities: Our clinical footprint is comprised of nine clinical divisions – Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology, Obstetric Anesthesiology, Neuroanesthesiology & Perioperative Neurosciences, Seattle Children’s Hospital (Pediatric Anesthesiology), UW Medical Center – Montlake Multispecialty Anesthesiology, Critical Care Anesthesiology, Harborview Medical Center, VA Puget Sound Hospital, and Pain Medicine – across six University and University-affiliated sites, including the Montlake and Northwest campuses of the UW Medical Center, Harborview Medical Center (the only Level-1 Trauma Center in the five-state WWAMI region), Seattle Children’s Hospital, and VA Puget Sound Hospital.
Research Activities: UW APM has a robust sponsored research program with over 30 faculty investigators conducting basic science, clinical and translational research at UW's Health Sciences Complex, Harborview Medical Center, UW's South Lake Union campus, and the Seattle Children’s Research Institute. Our combined UW and Seattle Children’s annual sponsored research funding from government and private sources exceeds $19 million.
Appointment Details
A full-time faculty appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor rank (without tenure due to funding). Salary and academic appointment at the University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. Associate and Full Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The base salary range for this position will be: Associate Professor $33,843 - $40,145 per month ($406,116 - $481,740 annually) or Professor $35,657 - $46,431 per month ($427,884 - $557,172 annually) commensurate with experience, qualifications, and specialty or as mandated by a US Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan or Children’s University Medical Group (CUMG) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Other compensation associated with this position may include incentive pay through the UWP practice plan or CUMG practice plan and an administrative salary supplement for administrative service as Vice Chair, EDI. Compensation provided by the UWP or CUMG practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization. Qualifications
Candidates should have MD or DO (or foreign equivalent), be board certified or eligible (or foreign equivalent) in anesthesiology and be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Washington. Must have a minimum of one-year fellowship training (or foreign equivalent) in critical care medicine for critical care position, one-year fellowship training in pain medicine for pain position or one-year fellowship training for pediatric position. To be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-US) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the US Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
