Position Description

The Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Washington is looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated postdoctoral scholar to work on a project sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) under the mentorship and supervision of Prof. David Bergsman. The candidate will conduct research on the “Vapor Phase Infiltration of Metal Oxides for Polymer Protection in Low Earth Orbit.”

Ideal candidates will be creative and passionate individuals who are committed to quality, integrity, and safety, and have hands-on laboratory experience in one or more of the following areas:

1.      Atomic layer processing

2.      Vacuum system assembly and maintenance

3.      Materials characterization using ellipsometry, secondary ion mass spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical analysis

Experience in technoeconomic analysis and machining equipment is a plus.

Candidates will have the opportunity to engage with the vacuum and space communities through attendance at conferences, meetings, and networking events. They will receive hands-on research mentorship and professional development support.

This full-time 100% FTE position is offered for 1 year (12 months) with potential for renewal depending on job performance and funding availability.  The base salary range for this position will be $5,705/month ($68,460/year), or as mandated by the U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. 

The primary responsibility of the role to use atomic layer processing tools to create a surface coating that can protect polymers in low earth orbit, through hands-on laboratory work and in partnership with local and national collaborators.

Additional responsibilities include:

1.   Maintaining vacuum equipment

2.      Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students

3.      Participating and contributing to regular lab meetings

4.      Preparing reports for the funding agency

5.      Developing intellectual property

6.      Writing and publishing results in scientific journals

7.      Presenting research results to peers and at conferences

8.      Participating in professional development activities, including DEIA efforts

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

·         PhD degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related field.

·         Experience in atomic layer processing, vacuum systems, or materials characterization.

·         Ability to function and thrive in a collaborative environment.

·         Experience in publishing articles in peer reviewed journals.

·         Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

·         Interest in mentoring / supervising graduate and undergraduate students.

·         Ability to manage priorities and timelines.

Desired Qualifications:

·         Expertise in atomic layer processing tools, including atomic layer deposition (ALD), molecular layer deposition (MLD),              vapor phase infiltration (VPI), or sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS).

·         Expertise in the characterization of thin organic, inorganic and hybrid films

·         Expertise in the characterization of polymer films

·         Experience in characterization techniques including: ellipsometry, SIMS, SEM, TEM, EDXS, EELS, XPS, SEM, IR                            Spectroscopy, TGA, DMA, DSC

·         Experience with building and maintaining vacuum systems, such as vacuum deposition systems

·         Expertise in building equipment using a machine shop

·         Experience in technoeconomic analysis.

        Experience in the modeling of mechanical fracturing.

        Experience in programming using LabVIEW or other modern programming languages.
