Position Description

The University of Washington Tacoma School of Nursing & Healthcare Leadership (SNHCL) invites applications for two (2) teaching-track professor positions, at the rank(s) of Assistant or Associate Teaching Professor. These are full-time (100% FTE), teaching-track positions with a nine-month service period during the academic year, with an expected start date of September 16, 2025. The initial appointment will be for a three-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal.

Responsibilities

All faculty at the University of Washington engage in teaching, scholarship, and service within their school, the University, and their professional community. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in multiple modalities, including online, hybrid, and in-person, in an urban-serving campus environment. The successful candidate will teach lower-division courses emphasizing nursing, health and healthcare leadership topics, and may teach upper-division and graduate courses required of majors.

Teaching professors are also required to maintain a program of teaching scholarship and service including participating on school- and campus-wide committees. Although teaching professors are not required to publish, they may demonstrate scholarship through publications as well as a variety of other ways such as introduction of new knowledge or methods into course content; creation or use of innovative pedagogical methods; development of new courses, curricula, or course materials; participation in professional conferences; evidence of student performance; receipt of grants or awards; contributions to interdisciplinary teaching; participation and leadership in professional associations; or significant outreach to professionals at other educational institutions.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and engage in services that demonstrate cultural responsiveness to the needs of diverse and underrepresented groups and populations. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and mentor adult students from socially minoritized and historically underrepresented populations, e.g., immigrants, gender identity/fluidity, race, culture, and ethnicity.

While not required, positive factors for consideration also include:

  • Teaching experience in nursing education, healthcare administration/management, nursing or health related professional development, or related health professions education.
  • Plan for program of scholarship in the area of teaching and learning.
  • Expertise in curriculum development, and/or teaching in multiple modalities, including online, hybrid and in-person.
  • Experience teaching at both undergraduate and/or graduate levels.
  • For appointment as an associate teaching professor, extensive teaching, and nursing expertise with evidence of scholarly work that is related to teaching and learning.
  • Experience working creatively and effectively with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: community/population health, healthcare leadership/management, disease prevention/health promotion, chronic disease care, and/or an advanced nursing specialty (indirect care).

 Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this position is $9,444 to $9,889 per month ($84,996 to $89,001 per 9-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include professional development funds, a one-time moving allowance, and/or summer research funding. As one of three campuses of the UW School of Nursing, the SNHCL is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

The SNHCL currently offers two undergraduate degrees, a Bachelor of Arts in Healthcare Leadership (BAHCL) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).  The BAHCL prepares students from a range of professions and backgrounds for careers in leadership positions across a spectrum of healthcare settings, including healthcare organizations, government, and industry. The undergraduate nursing program is designed for registered nurses (RN) to attain their BSN degree.  This program emphasizes communication, critical thinking, equity, and social justice, care across the lifespan, leadership, research, and scholarship toward improving health outcomes, population health, and adapting to changes in healthcare.  The school also offers a graduate degree, the Master of Nursing, that prepares nurses with in-depth knowledge and skills as systems leaders in a range of practice settings.  Preliminary planning has begun for the development of a master’s degree in healthcare leadership, a doctoral degree in nursing, and a pre-licensure program in nursing, resulting in a BSN.

The SNHCL supports the interdisciplinary mission of the campus through teaching, scholarly inquiry, and service. Within the campus' overall mission, the SNHCL focuses on the discovery and dissemination of knowledge that promotes health within an ethic of social justice. The SNHCL provides needed educational services to prepare professionals for leadership positions in advancing nursing practice and improving health. The curriculum emphasizes and fosters the integration of teaching, inquiry, and service through a community of learners.

Qualifications

  • An earned Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in nursing, healthcare administration, healthcare management, or related field, and demonstrated effectiveness in teaching and/or professional training in the candidate’s area of expertise, is required.
  • An earned Doctoral degree (or foreign equivalent) in nursing, healthcare administration, or related field is also acceptable.
  • For an appointment as faculty in the field of Nursing, candidates must have a Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in the field of Nursing. A PhD (or foreign equivalent) in the field of Nursing is also acceptable. If the applicant is a licensed professional, they must be licensed in Washington state (or a NLC Compact state if licensed as a nurse), or be able to obtain this licensure by the time of appointment.
