UW TACOMA LIBRARY 

The UW Tacoma Library engages in the full spectrum of scholarly and teaching activities for the University of Washington Tacoma campus. As such, the UW Tacoma Library plays an essential role in the learning, teaching, research, and community partnership work of the University through access, collections, consultations, digital scholarship support, events, instruction, reference, service, and technology. UW Tacoma librarians work in a matrixed model in which all librarians carry responsibility for a single area of library work, but also contribute to all areas of the library.

THE POSITION 

The University of Washington Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean of UW Tacoma Library. This is an exceptional opportunity to help shape major programs, strategic directions, and service initiatives at one of the nation’s premier academic libraries. 

Reporting through Workday to the Dean of Libraries, but with primary oversight by the Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (EVCAA) for UW Tacoma, the Associate Dean is a member of the EVCAA’s leadership team and is responsible for strategic visioning, policy and program development, operations and personnel, and overall innovation and excellence in the UW Tacoma Library. The Associate Dean provides leadership for transformational and user-centered services; integrated educational and curricular programs; staff development at all levels; an inclusive environment that also prioritizes equity and diversity; responsive collections and information resources; assessment; and marketing of services. The Associate Dean works closely with the EVCAA and other UW Tacoma administrative teams to accomplish these responsibilities, and to foster and maintain effective cross-campus communication and coordination. The Associate Dean builds strong collaborative leadership relationships across UW Tacoma, and as a member of Libraries Cabinet, across the UW Libraries tri-campus environment.

This position is primarily in-person and may be eligible for limited hybrid work.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Working closely with the EVCAA, collaborates with UW Tacoma leadership in developing Library and campus-level strategic initiatives; ensures that Library decisions and operations are aligned with the campus strategic plan, multi-year enrollment growth, and student success and faculty research initiatives.
  • Work closely with the Dean of University Libraries and UW Libraries Cabinet members to ensure quality programs, services, and collections; actively contribute to the ongoing stewardship and strategic directions of the UW Libraries.
  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Success, Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion, and other partners, to develop and sustain the Learning Commons. Ensuring student success is a priority for UW Tacoma Library planning and services.
  • Work with library staff to build more equitable and inclusive programs, services, and spaces.
  • Ability to foster collaborative attitudes with internal and external groups and represent both the University Libraries and the UW Tacoma Library in a variety of venues.
  • Provide for ongoing assessment of UW Tacoma Library services to ensure they meet current and future institutional needs.
  • Oversee a complex cost-effective library budget.
  • Provide for continual skills and professional development of Library staff; cultivate leadership skills of staff; foster a sense of community and shared vision within the Library.
  • Work with University of Washington Tacoma and University Libraries’ advancement to identify and develop resources to support programs to enhance the excellence of the UW Tacoma Library and the campus.  

RANK

BENEFITS  

Librarians are academic personnel and participate in the University of Washington Retirement Plan (UWRP) or the state’s Public Employee Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment. Vacation is accrued at the rate of 26 working days per year; sick leave at the rate of 12 working days per year. No state or local income tax. Appointees solely employed and paid directly by a non-UW entity are not UW employees and are not eligible for UW or Washington State employee benefits.

SALARY

The base salary range for this position will be $10,000 to $11,750 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. An administrative supplement in the amount of $1,000/month will be established at time of appointment. Other compensation associated with this position may include a relocation incentive payment and a moving allowance.

ANTICIPATED START DATE 

While we hope to fill the position in Winter Quarter 2025, we are happy to work with the successful candidate to explore opportunities for an earlier or later start date.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS 

Required

  • Graduate degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  • At least five years of successful library experience including leadership experience in an academic library setting.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and a more socially just society and understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the multi-faceted roles of libraries in higher education and the broader community.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a collaborative management environment and to function effectively as a member of a strong leadership team.
  • Engaged commitment to organizational and staff development and mentoring.
  • Excellent knowledge and experience with current and future issues and opportunities for enhancing the role of libraries in research, teaching, and learning.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting and ensuring student success and engagement, both curricular and co-curricular.
  • Experience with managing significant budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an articulate advocate with superior entrepreneurial, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Preferred

  • Experience with managing unionized staff.
  • Experience and/or demonstrated interest in planning, construction, and/or renovation of libraries.
  • Familiarity with on-going assessment of services, collections, and facilities.
  • Demonstrated understanding and experience with the role of grants, fundraising, and donor relations in libraries.
  • Record of research, publication, and professional contributions.
