Position Description
The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) at the University of Washington seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with specialization in Pacific salmon ecology, evolution and management. The successful applicant is expected to establish a rigorous, externally funded field-based research program that considers the cultural, ecological, and economical importance of salmon across their entire range, with a particular focus on the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, candidates who indicate the potential to engage directly with Native American tribes, management agencies, and commercial and recreational fishers; individuals who demonstrate a high likelihood of developing a successful research program within the UW's Alaska Salmon Program, as evidenced by exceptional achievements in leading research programs at remote field sites; and candidates who can contribute to the long-standing quantitative expertise of the School’s faculty. The initial appointment of an Assistant Professor is typically for a period of three years. Renewal for a second three-year term will be considered by the department and school/college/campus spring quarter of the second year.
This is a full-time (100% FTE), 9-month position with an anticipated September 16, 2025 start date.

SAFS maintains unique research and teaching facilities, such as the University of Washington Fish Collection, field stations in southwestern Alaska, the Columbia Basin Research program, and hosts the USGS Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit. Compensation
The base salary range for this position will be $9,500 - $18,000 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing-wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance, a relocation incentive, and/or commitment of summer salary.
Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a field relevant to salmon ecology, evolution, and management, by the start of the appointment. They must also show evidence of teaching effectiveness and/or potential for high-quality teaching and mentoring.
To be considered for appointment at the Associate Professor (with Tenure) rank, candidates must have achieved this rank at another institution and must have had outstanding success in research and teaching.
