Position Description

The School of Art Art History Design at the University of Washington welcomes applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Photo/Media BA Program and the New Genres MFA Program to start in September 2025. This position is 100% full-time with a 9-month service period. This position will teach in Photo/Media and expanded fields, and demonstrate college-level teaching expertise and comprehensive knowledge of the contemporary art landscape—encompassing its political, theoretical, historical, and technical dimensions. Specializations could include, but are not limited to: photography, video, sound, emerging technologies, installation, or performance.

 

The successful candidate will teach studio-based classes and contribute to service and curriculum development in the Undergraduate Photo/Media and New Genres Programs as well as the New Genres MFA Graduate Program, and the Division of Art. This position will be expected to engage in research-driven practice and to facilitate collaborations across disciplines, university units, and with community partners.

 

The Photo/Media and New Genres Programs advance formal and technical knowledge as well as emphasize individual research, critical thinking, experimentation, and an active engagement with issues in contemporary art. Facilities include B/W darkrooms, large-format digital printers, sound studio, analogue and digital cameras, professional video cameras, lighting equipment, and various editing suites along with multiple student galleries, graduate studios, a lighting studio, and classrooms.

 

Salary Range: Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be $9,100 - $10,400 per month on a 9-month basis ($81,900 - $93,600 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. 

Qualifications

Applicants must have a minimum of a Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Fine Arts or other relevant field. Candidates will evidence a strong professional record of creative research and teaching expertise.
