UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time instructional assistant in Professional & Continuing Education’s (PCE) non-credit Specialization in Grant Writing & Management Strategies. Instructional assistants serve in a key role in Specialization programs, engaging with students, collaborating with the instructor, grading student work, and monitoring student progress. 

The pay range for this position is $20-25 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Length of assignments and shifts vary depending on specific staffing needs of individual courses and programs.  

Professional and Continuing Education Instructional Assistants… 

  • Support instructor to manage Zoom for live class which includes but is not limited to: 
    • Scheduling all Zoom class sessions 
    • Starting and ending all Zoom class sessions on time 
    • Managing settings of Zoom to ensure chat is enabled, students can display pronouns/change name, instructors are added as co-hosts, etc. 
    • Managing any guest speakers coming to online class by sharing Zoom link ahead of time, sharing slides they want to use, etc. 
    • Managing chat and breakout rooms 
    • Ensuring class is being recorded and that the recording is promptly uploaded to Canvas  
  • Attend live classes each week (3 hours per week) to manage the above Zoom responsibilities, make connections with students, and stay up to date with curriculum being taught. If you have a conflict with live class, communicate ahead of time with instructors and ensure Zoom is set up with instructors as co-hosts.  
  • Serve as the primary responder to student inquiries such as content questions, assignment questions, policies, etc. Use discretion on when to escalate questions to the instructor or the appropriate administrative staff. Timely response is 24 hours for email and discussion board posts and 72 hours to grade assignments. 
  • Support a positive student experience in the program through: 
    • Serving as a contact for tech or UW related questions. Respond within 1-2 business days. Escalate questions as necessary to instructors or UW Program Manager. 
    • Monitoring student discussion forums and reminding instructors to respond to messages needing responses, as needed.  
    • Flagging participation issues and notifying instructors, as needed. 
  • Coordinate with the course instructor to ensure curriculum continuity including but not limited to: reviewing Canvas pages prior to each upcoming module to check for potential broken links, typos, incorrect due dates, etc. 
  • Participate in check-ins with instructors prior to start of each course and during the course (as needed) 
  • Assist with community building opportunities for students during live class and throughout the program. 
  • Provide grading support as directed by the instructor. 
  • Collaborate with program manager, instructor, and the rest of the instructional team to address student course evaluation feedback. 
  • Work collaboratively with the course instructor, adapting an approach based on feedback and sound pedagogical practices. 
  • Maintain high standards of professionalism, timeliness, and content relevance for diverse adult students. 
  • Complete instructor onboarding process and relevant learning technology training. 
  • Observe FERPA, HIPAA, and other privacy laws and policies. 

This specialization is 12 weeks in duration and aligns with the UW academic quarter calendar. This course meets on Wednesdays 09/25/2024 - 12/18/2024 (no meeting on 11/27/2024 due to holiday). This course is offered in the synchronous online format. UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Instructional Assistants are Academic Staff, not faculty. These are part-time, temporary positions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Minimum one year of professional experience working with grants. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills. 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Ability, and desire, to work with individuals from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. 
  • Legal authorization to work and receive compensation in the United States. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Prior teaching or mentoring experience, particularly with adult learners. 
  • Prior experience with online learning.
