Title: Teaching Associate - College of Education Sisterhood Initiative

Position Details

Position Description

The Sisterhood Initiative (SI) at the University of Washington serves to provide holistic support to undergraduates who identify as women of color and empowers them to show up authentically in all aspects of their academic, professional, and personal lives. Housed in the College of Education and building on the success of the Brotherhood Initiative, the SI works collaboratively with a variety of campus partners (i.e.- the Counseling Center, Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, and Undergraduate Academic Affairs) and is guided by a dedicated steering committee primarily comprised of women of color staff, faculty, and community members. The strength of the SI lies in the cohort model. Each member of the SI has self-selected to intentionally support and be supported by the other women in the program and the SI staff. The primary goals of the SI are to 1) Increase enrollment, retention, and graduation rates for women of color at UW by utilizing a holistic cohort model to support students in achieving their academic, personal, and professional goals; 2) Contribute to extent literature regarding women of color undergraduates at predominantly white institutions with specific note of the holistic and intersectional practices employed by the SI that can be used to inform practices in working with women of color across a variety of educational and career fields; and 3) Actively engage students in projects/activities that enhance the experience of future WOC undergraduates at the University of Washington (i.e.- peer mentor program, engagement in participatory action research).

The SI curriculum is continuing to evolve, develop, and expand, and requires a committed instructional assistant to maintain and support this growth. The SI Teaching Associate will be responsible for working collaboratively with the SI instructional team on curriculum development and providing extensive feedback to students for the SI freshmen and sophomore seminars.

This is a temporary, non-voting, non-tenure track position for the 9 month academic year from September 16, 2024 through June 15, 2025 at 25% FTE. The full-time monthly salary will be pro-rated to the position’s FTE of 25% ($1,672.50 to $1,707.50 per month).

This position requires strong communication skills and an ability to work effectively and collaboratively across diverse cultural and institutional contexts.
