Position Description
The University of Washington, School of Environmental and Forest Sciences invites applications for a full-time (100% FTE; 80% teaching, 20% service), nine-month, faculty position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor in the field of environmental and forest sciences to support our large and growing undergraduate and graduate programs. The successful candidate could contribute to leadership in experiential learning and assessment, with opportunities for pedagogical research on topics such as teaching effectiveness and/or diversity, equity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will contribute to service and core courses within the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences. Upper-division and graduate-level curriculum could be also developed in the applicant's area of expertise, potentially addressing key needs in environmental and forest management, stewardship planning, resource measurement, and policy.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, scholarship, and service. Our Teaching Professors are long-term educational professionals who combine instructional excellence with a variety of leadership, community building, outreach, advancement of pedagogy, and scholarship. Teaching Professors are full voting members of the university faculty but ineligible for tenure. The anticipated start of the position is September 16, 2025.
The successful applicant will:
1. Teach up to six courses per academic year (10-week quarter system, 3 quarters per academic year) across the curriculum in the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, with a specific focus on service and core courses to support our programs in Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Sustainable Forest Management, and Master of Forest Resources.
2. Advance educational scholarship in the teaching program with emphasis on innovative pedagogy and attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This may include contributing to the growing community of pedagogical researchers within the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences and the College of the Environment.
3. Play an active service role at the Unit, College, and University level, for example, by engaging in shared governance, serving on committees, contributing to the implementation of evidence-based practices throughout the instructional program and the training and mentoring of teaching assistants.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this position is $9,256 to $11,000 per month commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include start-up funds, lump sum moving allowance and/or a relocation incentive. The initial appointment period is for 3 years with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2025.
Qualifications
Applicants must have expertise in the application of environmental and forest sciences. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree, or foreign equivalent, in any subdiscipline of environmental or forest sciences, or a related field, by the start date of the appointment. In addition, candidates must have been the primary instructor at least twice at the college level and demonstrated teaching excellence.

1. One-page cover letter on why the candidate is applying to the position and how the candidate fits the position.
2. Curriculum vitae detailing the candidate’s teaching, publication, funding, and professional service history, and that also includes a summary table of past teaching experiences (i.e., class name and number, number of students, number of credits, level (undergraduate, graduate, both), type of course (lecture/lab/both)).
3. A two-page (maximum) teaching philosophy statement describing the candidate's teaching experience, values and practices; please comment on your perspectives regarding course design and teaching methods, and how you engage students from diverse disciplines and backgrounds and incorporate diversity, equity, justice, and inclusivity into your teaching practices.
4. A teaching portfolio (maximum of 30 pages) that provides evidence of teaching excellence. Please include up to a 1 page introduction to these materials and a table of contents. Materials could include teaching samples, sample syllabi, rubrics, evidence of teaching collaborations, teaching evaluations, flipped classroom samples, assignment descriptions or links to previously recorded lectures, etc. Successful candidates will incorporate diversity, equity, justice and inclusivity in this portfolio.
