Position Description

The School of Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Washington, invites applications for one full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor (100% FTE, 9-month appointments) working in the area of Terrestrial Avian Ecology. The position is anticipated to start in September 2025, negotiable within reasonable bounds. The initial appointment of an Assistant Professor is typically for a period of three years. Renewal for a second three-year term will be considered by the department and school/college/campus spring quarter of the second year. 

 

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to candidates whose research foci and approaches include a substantial field component, are applicable to actionable science, and complement existing SEFS research strengths and visions. The applicant will contribute to teaching needs in the Environmental Science and Terrestrial Resource Management (ESRM) major - with emphasis on the undergraduate option in Wildlife Conservation - and graduate teaching. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to embark on an exciting, innovative academic career at a national/international level and will be expected to maintain an active and sustained program of creative and collaborative research; provide evidence-based, inclusive teaching; engage in superior communication, outreach and engagement inside and outside of the university; and attend to issues of equity and inclusion in their scholarly work. This position is expected to support our commitment to working actively to advance diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in SEFS and in the professions within which we work. We particularly encourage scholars who do not see themselves historically represented in academia to apply.

Responsibilities

At UW, all tenure-track faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful applicant will be expected to establish and maintain an active agenda of scholarly pursuits including externally supported research and creative and/or professionally-associated practice. The successful applicant will also teach courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels and participate in service activities within UW and/or amongst the communities of their academic peers and partners.

 

Compensation

The monthly salary range of $9,500 - $14,000 is commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance, a relocation incentive, and/or limited commitment of summer salary in the first year. 

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in a field relevant to terrestrial avian ecology. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of or potential to establish and develop an academic career at a national/international level with an active program of research and teaching, and attention to issues of equity and inclusion.

        A summary statement (of no more than 500 words) that integrates your research, teaching, and engagement contributions and experiences related to terrestrial avian ecology, and describes your experiences with promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion and justice, outreach, or community engagement.

●     A research statement (of no more than 1000 words) describing your interests, scholarly accomplishments, and future plans.

        A teaching statement (of no more than 600 words) describing your teaching philosophy, teaching and/or mentoring experience, and potential areas of teaching interest.

        A diversity statement (of no more than 600 words) describing your experiences, actions and commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and access as they relate to your research, teaching, and/or service.
