Position Description
The successful applicant will join a translational neuroscience research project within the Department of Pharmaceutics led by Dr. Melissa Barker-Haliski. The is a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative project at the interface of preclinical epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease research, with a focus on the behavioral and pathophysiological elucidation of the mechanisms of hyperexcitability in the aging and degenerating brain. This research project pairs transgenic models with a diversity of behavioral techniques and provides the opportunity to interact with scientists and clinicians from different fields of neuroscience and neurology. The project also provides the opportunity to apply novel molecular neuroscience techniques to the study of behavioral neuroscience. The successful applicant will also learn to manage laboratory personnel including research scientists and students, contribute to grant writing, and be primary author on manuscripts. Teaching opportunities may be available to qualified and interested candidates.
Main research responsibilities include:
§ Chronic video-EEG monitoring and small animal surgery.
§ Pharmacological studies to assess disease modification and prevention in rodent models of neurological disease.
§ Apply advanced animal behavioral techniques to the study of comorbidities of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.
§ Perform in vivo pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies in relevant preclinical models of aging-related epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease.
§ Deploy established methods to assess pathophysiological changes associated with neurological insult in relevant aging-related models of epilepsy and Alzheimer’s disease, which may include fluorescence microscopy, ELISA, electrophoresis, and advanced mRNA/miRNA expression profiling techniques.
The salary for this position will be $5,705-6,833 per month ($68,460-$78,249 annually), or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This is a grant-funded 12-month appointment renewable for up to three years provided funding availability and performance.
Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in neuroscience, pharmacology, or a closely related field.
Previous experience in neurodegeneratively diseased animal work is preferred; candidates must be willing to work with animals.
The candidate must be self-motivated and willing to acquire new skills and enjoy working both independently and in a team setting. Excellent attention to detail, good organization, and communication skills are essential to success.
