Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, Division of Physical Therapy, invites applications for Program Director and Associate Chair, Division of Physical Therapy, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. This is a full-time position, with tenure, appointed at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Associate Professors and Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Anticipated start date is Fall 2024, but other dates may be considered.

As Director and a member of the Division of Physical Therapy, the successful candidate will participate in research, teaching, and scholarship -- as well as leadership and program assessment and planning -- and will be expected to fulfill requirements for advancement along the Clinician-Scientist pathway of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine. 

The Director the Division of Physical Therapy role also holds the department title of Associate Chair, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Responsibilities include leading the administration and strategic growth of the division, program assessment and planning, teaching courses in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program, maintaining a productive research program, and demonstrating leadership in service. The Director is responsible for a range of essential functions including strategic planning; mentoring and evaluating faculty; supervising staff; fiscal management of a self-sustaining program; communication; recruiting a strong faculty and staff; leading the DPT program CAPTE and Graduate School accreditation processes; developing strategies for faculty professional development; promoting and supporting clinical, service, research, and PT residency programs; and actively supporting faculty and students in scholarly endeavors. Opportunities to mentor students in the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science and clinical residency programs are also available, as well as to collaborate with existing research teams and pursue an independent research portfolio.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position will be $12,900 - $15,500 per month ($154,800 - $186,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The Division Director administrative role carries an administrative supplement of $1,667 per month ($20,004 per annum) for as long as the individual hired holds the role.

Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance or relocation incentive, if applicable.

The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is nationally recognized for excellence in education, research, and clinical care.  The Department’s various research programs, led by world-renowned leaders in Rehabilitation Science -- as well as academic programs including the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics (MPO), Master of Occupational Therapy, and PhD in Rehabilitation Science programs -- provide rich opportunities for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and learning.

The Department has an exceptional record of successful extramural research funding and interprofessional collaboration.   In fiscal year 2023, a total of $15.7 million in research funding was awarded to departmental researchers. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DoD), and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR)/ Administration for Community Living (ACL) were our top sponsors, comprising a total of 72% of the awards we received. In addition, our departmental faculty who are based at VA Puget Sound Health Care System have a total of $21.8 million in current funding. 

The University of Washington enrolls approximately 60,000 students each year across its three campuses (Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell) and thrives as a center for groundbreaking research in a variety of fields. Located on the Seattle campus, the UW DPT program enrolls approximately 50 students per year and collaborates with other medical and research centers within and beyond the University.

The department has four clinical divisions: General Physiatry, Sports and Spine Physiatry, Pediatric Rehabilitation, and Rehabilitation Psychology & Neuropsychology. Faculty provide clinical services across four UW Medicine campuses: Harborview Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake, University of Washington Medical Center-Northwest, and UW Eastside Specialty Center. More than 25 of our faculty are based at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the Veteran’s Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, which are UW Medicine-affiliated organizations. The Sports and Spine division provides care at seven clinics throughout the UW Medicine system.

Qualifications

The successful candidates must

  • have an academic doctoral degree (PhD or foreign equivalent) in a relevant field and a Physical Therapy degree or a post-professional doctoral degree in a related field, or foreign equivalent
  • hold an active, unrestricted physical therapy license in any United States jurisdiction and be licensed or eligible for licensure as a physical therapist in the state of Washington
  • have a record of collaborative administration experience
  • have an established research program
  • have a minimum of six years of full-time teaching experience at the undergraduate or graduate level,  with a minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in a physical therapist education program
  • have regionally or nationally recognized clinical expertise
