Position Description
The Department of Biology at the University of Washington (UW) Seattle invites applications for two full-time, nine-month Assistant Teaching Professor positions, with an anticipated start date of September 2025. The initial appointment is for three years, with the possibility of renewal. These positions are promotable, but not eligible for tenure. While teaching needs are currently high in areas of ecology, evolution, and organismal biology, we welcome applications from candidates in all areas of biology.
The UW Department of Biology is a large, collaborative, and integrative department that provides a supportive environment for teaching, service, and scholarship. As a community of researchers, scholars, and teachers, we innovate in biology education and biology education research, and we engage with topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion to build a mutually supportive community. In addition, our new Life Sciences Building is equipped with classroom and laboratory spaces designed for active learning, and we support new colleagues through co-teaching experiences and teaching-and-learning communities of practice.
In our department, teaching professors are expected to teach large introductory courses and upper division courses, including laboratory courses. The department incorporates active, collaborative, inclusive, metacognitive, and reflective techniques in our approaches to teaching, service, and scholarship activities.

Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be $7,778 - $9,000 per month on a 9-month basis ($70,000 - $81,000 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Qualifications
Applicants must have earned a doctorate, or foreign equivalent, in the biological sciences or a related field by the date of appointment. Applicants must have at least one year of teaching experience in the life sciences.

1. Two brief statements that will be used for initial screening. Provide (1) an abstract for your teaching statement and (2) an abstract for your diversity statement. Limit: 200 words per abstract.
2. As a single PDF, provide the following documents:
● Cover letter. Explain why you are interested in joining the UW Department of Biology as an Assistant Teaching Professor. For example, how do your experiences and goals align with this position? Length: 1-2 pages.
● Curriculum vitae. In addition to education, employment, presentations & publications, professional development, and service, be sure to include teaching and mentoring experiences.
● Teaching statement. Describe your past experiences, future plans, and relevant strategies. Provide specific examples where appropriate. For example, what principles guide your design and implementation of course activities, assessments, and structures? What pedagogical approaches do you use, and why? Length: 1-2 pages.
● Diversity statement. Describe how you have contributed in the past and how you will contribute in the future, as a faculty member, to diversity, equity, and/or inclusion in the contexts of teaching, service, and/or scholarship. For guidance on writing a diversity statement, the UW Faculty Advancement Initiative suggests “How to Write an Effective Diversity Statement” by Tanya Golash-Boza (Inside Higher Ed). Length: 1-2 pages.
3. Provide the names and email addresses of three references who can provide letters of recommendation upon request.
