The University of Washington’s Responsibility in AI Systems and Experiences Center (RAISE) invites applications for a 1-year full time appointment as a Postdoctoral Scholar, with an option to extend for another year.
The UW RAISE is a multidisciplinary institute and a leading center for building, evaluating, and envisioning AI technologies in the area of Responsible AI. At RAISE, we envision a future where AI systems are developed, deployed, and used with a strong alignment with human values. Located at the University of Washington, a world-class research university in the Pacific Northwest, this new Center will lead programs that span research, education, policy, and outreach.
This Postdoctoral Scholar will work closely with Associate Professor Tanu Mitra with an opportunity to collaborate with other RAISE affiliated faculty. Primary responsibilities include:
1. Auditing existing AI systems and online platforms, include generative AI systems for bias, misinformation, hallucination, harms, and other forms of epistemic risks.
2. Creating customized solutions for addressing such epistemic risks in AI systems and the online platforms where they operate.
The iSchool is located in Seattle, Washington, on the homelands of the Coast Salish peoples whose land touches the shared waters of all tribes and bands within the Suquamish, Tulalip, and Muckleshoot nations. The successful candidate will join a broad-based, inclusive Information School, whose faculty members pursue their research, teaching, and service across multiple degree programs and are committed to leadership, innovation, social justice and upholding tribal sovereignty.

The base salary for this Postdoctoral Scholar position will be $5,705 – $5,833 per month ($68,460 – $70,000 per 12-month academic year), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.
Qualifications
Minimal Qualifications
· Skills and expertise in one or more of the following areas: Data Science, Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction
· Applicants must have a PhD, JD, EdD, or foreign equivalent by date of appointment.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills
· An ability to work in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, including demonstrated success in working with diverse populations
