Position Description

The University of Washington, Bothell invites applications and nominations for the position of 100% FTE, Dean in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The dean reports to the UW Bothell vice chancellor for academic affairs (VCAA).

The School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) was approved by the University of Washington Board of Regents in 2013 in response to the need for a greater number of STEM graduates to meet the demands of industry in Washington state. UW Bothell combines all the STEM fields in one academic unit, allowing for cross-disciplinary training and project work. The school's 79 full-time and 100 part-time faculty serve 1,225 undergraduate students and 294 graduate students in four divisions: biological sciences, computer & software systems, engineering & mathematics, and physical sciences.

The dean of the School of STEM will provide academic and administrative leadership to advance the school’s mission in education and service within a strong shared governance environment. The dean, in collaboration with faculty, staff and students, is expected to develop a vision for the future of education in STEM broadly defined, and manage the school's resources in a manner that helps it achieve its goals. The dean is expected to identify, recruit, retain and develop outstanding diverse faculty and staff. The dean will also engage with alumni, industry and community partners, and state and federal government officials to advance the goals of the School of STEM and UW Bothell. The successful candidate will be expected to support the school's commitment to enhancing the student body, faculty, and staff, as well as UW Bothell's commitment to foster a diverse and inclusive environment. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. 

The dean will be eligible for a tenured appointment at the level of professor. The annual salary range for this position is $220,000 to $230,000.

SCHOOL OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS

The School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) was approved by the University of Washington Board of Regents in 2013 in response to the need for a greater number of STEM graduates to meet the demands of industry in Washington state. UW Bothell combines all STEM fields in one academic unit, allowing for cross-disciplinary training and project work. The school's 79 full-time and 100 part-time faculty serve 1,225 undergraduate students and 294 graduate students in the following four divisions:

Biological Sciences: provides students with a foundation that will enable them to pursue careers or graduate study in medicine, dentistry, health professions, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, ecology, biology, and biology education. Because every student is required to participate in undergraduate research as part of their degree, Biology students leave Bothell with hands-on research skills and a deep knowledge of the process and practice of science, which will serve them in any career.

Computer & Software Systems: offers computer science and software engineering degrees that emphasize how to think about, design, and create quality software-enabled systems that have real impact in organizations and the world.

Engineering & Mathematics: prepares students by developing strong skills in the fundamental mathematical and scientific principles enabling them to either seek employment in industry or go on to graduate study.

Physical Sciences: offers students the opportunity to understand how the natural world works and to use their knowledge and skills to build a rewarding future.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The dean is responsible for all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education, academic planning, assessment and accreditation of instructional programs, educational policy, academic advising, academic resource management, development and revenue goals, oversight of the operational budget, and faculty and staff personnel actions. The dean oversees the faculty and staff within the School of STEM while advancing the school’s mission, values, and diversity and equity plan.

·       School leadership: The dean is responsible for all matters relating to the educational, budgetary, and administrative affairs of their schools. In these matters, the dean is responsible for faithful observance by the school of the university's general policies.

·       Mission alignment: The dean will ensure that the School of STEM mission and strategic plan are aligned with the UW Bothell mission, vision, and strategic plan that guide the campus towards providing a leading-edge educational experience. This leading-edge educational experience is founded on three distinctive practices: cross-disciplinarity, connected learning, and community engagement.

·       Campus collaboration and coordination: The dean serves on the VCAA Leadership Council. This body provides significant advice and recommendations to the Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs on core academic matters that cut across schools and other units on campus. Core academic matters include academic policy and initiatives, curricular and co-curricular activities across the undergraduate and graduate experience, and faculty and academic staff development.

·       Shared governance: Shared governance at the school level is an important value. The dean collaborates with an elected Faculty Council for the School of STEM and ensures that the school has relevant bylaws for shared governance. Similarly, shared governance of the institution is another important value at UW Bothell. The dean collaborates with the General Faculty Organization (GFO) that serves as the campus’ governing body and is the forum for faculty deliberation and decision-making, as well as the formulation and conveyance of advice to the Chancellor.

·       Recruit, Support, and Retain Strong Faculty and Staff:  The continued growth and excellence of the School of STEM will require an ongoing focus on the recruitment, retention, and development of faculty and staff. The dean must ensure highly qualified faculty and staff are recruited, hired, retained, upskilled, and provided with opportunities for growth and promotion as appropriate. The dean must also have a clear vision, plan, and commitment to recruiting, supporting, and retaining historically marginalized faculty and staff. The dean will also provide support systems and advocate on behalf of the faculty to ensure faculty are able to balance excellence in both teaching, research, and under-graduate research. Mentorship opportunities, especially for junior faculty, and community building will be essential for the School of STEM's future. Advocating for the needs of faculty and staff will be critical in the retention and recruitment efforts of faculty and staff. 

·       External relations: The dean is responsible for creating and nurturing school advisory boards composed of community and industry leaders and partners. The dean helps advisory boards to be key partners in securing external resources to advance the School of STEM.

·       Scholarly and professional engagement: The dean advances scholarly effort in relevant regional or national communities of practice related to their leadership and/or existing and emerging fields of study and professional engagement.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop, implement, and lead in the following:

    • Be a confident and compelling advocate who will work to enhance the visibility of the School both internally and externally. As the chief advocate and spokesperson, the dean will ensure the school is a recognized leader throughout the region and beyond.
    • Administrative operations of academic programs such as admissions, financial aid, student affairs, planning and budgeting, faculty and curriculum assessment, information technology, etc.
    • Lead within an academic organization with a strong culture of shared governance.
    • Develop and successfully implement new programs in the health professions, aligning with regulation and accreditation standards and processes for health programs.
    • Be actively involved in relevant professional associations; a national reputation as a leader within the field of nursing or other disciplines within the health professions, such as public health, clinical psychology, informatics.
    • Demonstrate and maintain leadership with transparency in administration and shared governance.  

Qualifications

  • Education: Qualified candidates must have a doctorate (or foreign equivalent) from an accredited institution in a STEM-related field 
  • Academic accomplishment: Candidates must have a record of outstanding teaching and recognized scholarly achievement with a current appointment as a tenured professor.
  • Successful record of administrative leadership gained within an academic institution.
  • Demonstrated success as a leader with a record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to meet budgets, grow revenues, develop people, promote equity, work collaboratively, and take appropriate risks to achieve goals.
