The University of Washington, Bothell invites applications and nominations for the position of 100% FTE, dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies (SNHS). The dean reports to the UW Bothell vice chancellor for academic affairs (VCAA). 

The School of Nursing and Health Studies (SNHS) offers four-degree programs: Master of Nursing; Master of Community Health & Social Justice; RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing; and Bachelor of Arts in Health Studies. The SNHS enjoys a close relationship with the University of Washington Seattle and the University of Washington Tacoma.

As a collective unit, the UW Tri-Campus Schools of Nursing are among the top schools in the nation, with rankings in the top two among public schools for their Doctor of Nursing, Master of Nursing, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The successful candidate will report to the vice chancellor for academic affairs.

The dean of the SNHS will provide academic and administrative leadership to advance the School’s mission in education, practice, and service within a strong shared governance environment. The dean is expected to develop a vision for the future of education in nursing and health studies broadly defined, with the ability to manage the School's resources in a manner that helps it achieve its goals. The dean is expected to identify, recruit, retain and develop outstanding diverse faculty and staff.  The dean will also engage with alumni, the health care community, and state and federal government officials to advance the goals of the SNHS and UW Bothell. The dean is expected to partner closely with leadership, faculty, and staff within the SNHS, with the other campus deans across UW Bothell, and the UW Tri-Campus School of Nursing. The successful candidate will be expected to support the school's commitment to enhancing the student body, faculty, and staff, as well as UW Bothell's commitment to foster a diverse and inclusive environment. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.  

The dean will be eligible for a tenured appointment at the level of professor. The annual salary range for this position is $210,000 to $220,000.

SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTH STUDIES

The School of Nursing and Health studies (SNHS) offers four-degree programs: Master of Nursing; Master of Community Health & Social Justice; RN to Bachelor of Science in Nursing; and Bachelor of Arts in Health Studies. The School is committed to advancing social justice, health, and nursing practice through innovative pedagogy, research, and community engagement. The interdisciplinary faculty in the School of Nursing and Health Studies create unique educational approaches grounded in inclusive learning environments that are accessible, oriented to life-long learning, and based on the highest professional standards.

U.S. News & World Report has once again ranked the UW Bothell’s Master of Nursing program No. 1 among public schools that offer a master’s degree. The program is No. 5 on the 2023 Best Nursing Schools: Master’s list that also includes private schools. U.S. News & World Report announced that the UW’s Bachelor of Science program in nursing (BSN) is tied for #2 as the country’s best program and is #1 among public universities. This ranking reflects the excellence of all three UW campuses.

The SNHS currently enrolls 313 undergraduate students and 63 graduate students. In the academic year 2023-2024, the SNHS has 318.4 student FTEs (268.3 undergraduate; 50.1 graduate). The School has 79 faculty (20 full-time, approximately 20 part-time), and 7 staff. The School is also supported by 42 adjunct and affiliate faculty.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The dean is responsible for all aspects of undergraduate and graduate education, academic planning, assessment and accreditation of instructional programs, educational policy, academic advising, academic resource management, development and revenue goals, oversight of the operational budget, and faculty and staff personnel actions. The dean oversees the faculty and staff within the SNHS while advancing the school’s mission, values, and diversity and equity plan.

•   School leadership: The dean is responsible for all matters relating to the educational, budgetary, and administrative affairs of their schools. In these matters, the dean is responsible for faithful observance by the school of the university's general policies.

  Mission alignment: The dean will ensure that the SNHS’s mission and strategic plan are aligned with the UW Bothell mission, vision, and strategic plan that guide the campus towards providing a leading-edge educational experience. This leading-edge educational experience is founded on three distinctive practices: cross-disciplinarity, connected learning, and community engagement.

•   Campus collaboration and coordination: The dean serves on the VCAA Leadership Council. This body provides significant advice and recommendations to the vice chancellor of Academic Affairs on core academic matters that cut across schools and other units on campus. Core academic matters include academic policy and initiatives, curricular and co-curricular activities across the undergraduate and graduate experience, and faculty and academic staff development.

•   Shared governance: Shared governance at the school level is an important value. The dean collaborates with an elected Faculty Council for the SNHS and ensures that the school has relevant bylaws for shared governance. Similarly, shared governance of the institution is another important value at UW Bothell. The dean collaborates with the General Faculty Organization (GFO) that serves as the campus’ governing body and is the forum for faculty deliberation and decision-making, as well as the formulation and conveyance of advice to the chancellor.

•   Recruit and Retain Strong Faculty and Staff: The dean will continue developing a faculty of distinction, establishing the highest standards in faculty recruitment, appointment, tenure, and promotion to enhance consistent excellence in teaching, research, and clinical practice. This will include identifying recruitment needs to support curriculum changes and program expansion. The dean will support the ongoing professional development of the faculty, in particular mentoring junior faculty. The dean will also support the professional development of staff, providing opportunities for them to enhance their skills and prepare them for additional roles within the SNHS as well as for opportunities for advancement across UW.

•   External relations: The dean is responsible for creating and nurturing school advisory boards composed of community and industry leaders and partners. The dean helps advisory boards to be key partners in securing external resources to advance the SNHS.

•   Scholarly and professional engagement: The dean advances scholarly effort in relevant regional or national communities of practice related to their leadership and/or existing and emerging fields of study and professional engagement.

LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES

·       Develop and Communicate a Vision and Strategy: The dean will invigorate the faculty and staff through the creation of a vibrant vision and corresponding strategic plan for a distinguished and contemporary School of Nursing and Health Studies, committed to academic and clinical excellence. The dean will engage the SNHS faculty and staff in determining its niche for outstanding academic programs that position graduates for success in the health workplace. The dean will evaluate the School’s current organizational structure, resources, information systems, and management, making appropriate changes as deemed necessary and within a shared governance process, to support its continued growth. The incoming dean will play an instrumental role in implementing the School's financial resources plan.

·       Identify Opportunities to Increase Student Enrollment: The dean will lead the faculty and staff in identifying new opportunities for academic program development and exploring fee-based programs to keep pace with the changing health care field with a focus on clinical education and health care workforce needs both regionally and nationally. This will include continuing efforts to develop and launch a pre-licensure BSN program. The dean also will identify and promote opportunities to strengthen student enrollment and retention with a focus on value-enhancement, identify areas where technology and new pedagogies can be leveraged, and strengthen the school's fiscal status.

·       Advocate for the School Internally and Externally: The dean is expected to be a prominent and effective advocate for the School within UW Bothell, and across UW, as well as within the larger community. The dean will seek opportunities to strengthen communications between the School’s faculty and those of the other UW Bothell schools and community. The dean will ensure strong partnerships with senior leadership of the SNHS's clinical partners and Tri-Campus School of Nursing. The dean will develop and maintain collaborative relationships with the leadership of local, regional, and national clinics, hospitals, health systems, and other health care organizations to provide sites for student clinical rotations and other field experiences.

·       Act as the "Face and Voice" of the School: The dean is expected to bring prominence to the School by actively participating in local, regional, state, and national health care and academic organizations (e.g., local hospitals, health departments, AACN, CCNE and other accrediting bodies, professional organizations at the state and national levels). The dean will seek opportunities for philanthropic support, playing a significant role in fund raising and friend raising for the SNHS.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop, implement, and lead in the following:

  • Administrative operations of academic programs such as admissions, financial aid, student affairs, planning and budgeting, faculty and curriculum assessment, & information technology.
  • Lead within an academic organization with a strong culture of shared governance.
  • Develop and successfully implement new programs in the health professions, aligning with regulation and accreditation standards and processes for health programs.
  • Be actively involved in relevant professional associations; a national reputation as a leader within the field of nursing or other disciplines within the health professions, such as public health, clinical psychology, informatics.
  • Demonstrate and maintain leadership with transparency in administration and shared governance.  

Qualifications

  • Education: Qualified candidates must have a doctorate from an accredited institution in a health-related field including nursing. Eligible for licensure as a registered nurse in Washington.
  • Academic accomplishment: Candidates must have a record of outstanding teaching and recognized scholarly achievement with a current appointment as a tenured professor.
  • Minimum of five years of senior experience as a dean, associate, or assistant dean, and/or department or program chair or director within a college or school of nursing, health professions or health sciences.
  • Demonstrated success as a leader with a record of solid performance as a skilled manager with the ability to meet budgets, grow revenues, develop people, work collaboratively, and take appropriate business risks to achieve goals.
