The University of Washington Department of Global Health, which bridges the Schools of Medicine (SOM) and Public Health (SPH), seeks a Research Assistant Professor to join the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh). Position Description  

The University of Washington (UW), Department of Global Health invites applications for one faculty position at the rank of Research Assistant Professor without tenure in the field of maternal/child health, diarrheal diseases, and gut health to join the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh). This is a full-time (100% FTE), 12-month service period position with an anticipated start date of spring/summer 2024. This position is based in Seattle, Washington. The base salary range for this position will be $8,750-$11,664 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include start-up funds, lump sum moving allowance, and/or a relocation incentive. 

Global WACh seeks to expand its scientific expertise in the Gut Health and Child Survival Program, which is a large program within the Center. This program includes multi-country clinical trials designed to optimize gut health and child survival, prevent and manage diarrhea and malnutrition, and improve growth. The successful applicant for this position will be expected to bring distinct leadership and expand this portfolio. This work is aligned with Center strategies to broaden the impact of our scientific research and to design, implement, and disseminate science that has potential for broad translation, sustainability, and wide-reaching impact.  The Research Assistant Professor position will also mentor future scientists interested in this topic area, both at the University of Washington and partnering institutions. This position will be important to bolster strengths in the Gut Health and Child Survival Program within Global WACh.    

 

This position will be expected to:

  • Make significant research contributions to the field of maternal/child health, diarrheal diseases, and gut health, particularly in low and middle income (LMIC) settings
  • Provide research program leadership and contribute to Global WACh infrastructure, including writing and managing grant-funding research
  • Collaborate with researchers, engage with broad network of community partners, and provide mentorship, particularly with diverse and underrepresented or economically disadvantaged students or colleagues
  • Contribute to the department’s mission of diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism in research, collaboration, and mentorship
  • Communicate their research findings effectively to a variety of audiences, including other researchers, policy makers and the public

As a member of the Department of Global Health, the candidate would be expected to regularly participate in Departmental activities such as mentoring, seminar participation or guest speaking, orientation(s), program and department faculty meetings, graduation ceremonies, search committees, conducting research, and other relevant academic activities in the Department. Teaching of courses is not an expectation of the research professorial track. Mentoring graduate students is an expectation of this research track. These include supervision of student research projects related or unrelated to their thesis or dissertation, supervision of practica or fieldwork placements. The faculty member will be expected to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism and creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of the research community. The successful candidate will be expected to address barriers that underrepresented groups face in research and collaborations. 

 

The Department values equitable compensation among its faculty and follows established faculty compensation guidelines. All faculty, particularly on the professional tracks such as this position, are expected to engage in substantial and substantive externally-funded scholarly work. Base Salary Coverage facilitates that scholarship, with the work funded through direct cost activities in research and/or academic practice. About the Institution 

 

The Department of Global Health’s major research, educational, and capacity-building programs focus on a broad range of health issues, including several with strong, synergistic links to woman, adolescent, and child health; HIV and other infectious diseases; mental health; injury and violence prevention; drug safety; health metrics; and health systems strengthening and program delivery.  The department’s research programs range from interdisciplinary laboratory-based investigation through multi-center clinical trials, metrics development, program evaluation and implementation science.   

 

The position will sit in the Global Center for the Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents, and Children (Global WACh), a University-chartered Center that is home to 18 full-time faculty, 33 staff, 5 postdoctoral scholar and 11 student research assistants working towards our mission to make scientific discoveries, cultivate leaders, and bridge disciplines to advance the tightly connected health and well-being of women, adolescents and children. Global WACh brings together expertise in maternal health from the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology, neonatal, child, and adolescent health expertise from the Department of Pediatrics, and vast experience working in infectious disease, health metrics and evaluation, education, clinical research, and service delivery within the Department of Global Health. These disciplines combine under a methodology that views women, children, and adolescents as three populations interconnected along a shared life course. Global WACh is home to over 40 grants that span clinical research, observational trials, infectious disease, program evaluation, education and training, and service delivery within the Department of Global Health.  

Qualifications

To be considered for this position, all applicants must have: 

  1. A Ph.D. in epidemiology, implementation science, public health or related field (or foreign equivalent), or a clinical degree such as MD, MBBS, MBChB, or MMed (or foreign equivalent);
  2. A strong track record in research in maternal/child health, diarrheal diseases, and gut health, and experience working in collaborative, multi-site clinical trials;
  3. Demonstrated ability to successfully secure grants and publish scientific findings, with a proven track record of gaining independent funding;
  4. Demonstrated notable efforts to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism.
