The Department of Biomedical Informatics and Medical Education (BIME) at the University of Washington (UW) is recruiting an Assistant Professor Without Tenure (by reason of funding). The successful candidate will carry out basic and applied biomedical informatics research (approximately 80% effort) and engage in a service role within UW Medicine Information Technology Services (ITS) in support of UW Medicine strategic priorities in informatics (approximately 20% effort). This is a full-time, indefinite term position with a 12-month appointment. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service.

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to:

  • Documented evidence of research success across a broad range of biomedical informatics.
  • Excellence in research on research computing, analytics and clinical application areas (including, for example: work in secondary use of EHR data for research, tools for researchers to leverage EHR data for research).
  • Excellence in biomedical informatics research broadly, including the ability to work with clinicians and clinical applications.
  • Prior experience in informatics practice/service capacities.
  • Experience mentoring and/or teaching MS, PhD. students and postdoctoral trainees in the biomedical informatics domain.
  • Strong computing expertise
  • Demonstrable history of inter-professional collaboration spanning discovery to application, including clinical collaborators. 

In addition to developing a strong independent research program, a successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute leadership to the growing UW Institute for Medical Data Science (IMDS), UW Medicine Research Information Technologies, the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS), and/or UW Medicine Analytics. 

The Department of BIME and the UW Medicine health system believe there is a critical synergy between biomedical informatics research and informatics service/practice within the health system. The 20% role in support of UW Medicine IT Services involves deeply engaging in key areas in the practice of biomedical informatics in the operational clinical, analytics, and research computing areas within UW Medicine’s dynamic real-world health system. The work for this role will be driven by ITS priorities and UW Medicine priorities as they overlap with the candidate’s informatics skills. Oversight and accountability for these activities will be provided by the BIME Chair and senior UW Medicine ITS Leadership.

New faculty will join the numerous other BIME faculty, graduate students, and ~75 UW staff who are working across the spectrum of foundational, applied, and operational aspects of clinical informatics, translational bioinformatics (TBI), and clinical research informatics (CRI). The scope of clinical and analytics resources includes: a) an enterprise inpatient and outpatient electronic health records deployed across 4 hospitals (including a regional burn center and Level I trauma center) and affiliated clinics and a primary care clinic network, b) multiple data warehouses extracting data from the clinical information systems, c) an Accountable Care Organization reporting team, and d) multiple grants across the field of biomedical informatics including artificial intelligence, data science, text mining, natural language processing, large language models, FAIR principles, health equity. The scope of CRI/TBI resources include: a) the local CTSA informatics core, b) a research informatics consulting service, c) secondary use of EHR data for research including phenotyping (e.g., using data repositories from analytics), d) electronic data capture (e.g., REDCap), e) bio-specimen acquisition system, f) expanding precision medicine informatics infrastructure, g) a Clinical Trial Management System, h) universal consent and consent management.

This position is part of an ongoing broader recruitment effort within BIME, to recruit faculty at multiple ranks in the areas of Analytics, Clinical Informatics, Clinical Research Informatics, Precision Medicine/Translational Bioinformatics, and expansion of an ACGME accredited Clinical Informatics Fellowship program.

The BIME Department consists of 30 core faculty and 60 extended faculty representing 24 departments across the University of Washington engaged in a broad range of foundational and applied biomedical informatics research, as well as scholarship and practice activities around medical education. In addition to an active informatics research program, the Department faculty are responsible for the operation, evaluation and refinement of the Biomedical Informatics research training programs (MS, Ph.D., Postdoc with ~ 65 trainees), the NIH NLM T15 informatics and data science research training grant, and the joint (with School of Nursing) applied MS in Clinical Informatics and Patient-Centered Technologies (CIPCT, currently ~60 active students). The CIPCT program is a fully online program that serves as a didactic foundation of our clinical informatics fellowship. Where appropriate, our faculty aim to translate our foundational and applied scholarship into practice at the UW and partner institutions within our operational clinical and research computing groups. It is expected that new faculty will engage in a similar range of activities including one or more of informatics research, teaching, and the practice of analytics, clinical informatics, clinical research informatics, and/or translational bioinformatics.




Candidates must have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a biomedical informatics or another relevant discipline. An M.D. (or foreign equivalent) with relevant significant formal biomedical informatics-related training, scholarship, and practice is also acceptable.
