Title: Assistant Teaching Professor of Quantitative Environmental Sciences

Position Details

Position Description

The UW College of the Environment welcomes people of all backgrounds, who bring a range of perspectives and life experiences. We acknowledge that if the environmental sciences do not adequately reflect the diversity of national and local populations, then science, policy and management are much less likely to reflect the knowledge, interest, and will of all stakeholders. The successful candidate is expected to contribute substantially to our ongoing efforts to create an ever more inclusive environment. We encourage applications from candidates from underrepresented groups.

The University of Washington Schools of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS) and Environmental and Forest Sciences (SEFS) invite applications for a full-time (100% FTE), nine-month, faculty position at the level of Assistant Teaching Professor in the field of quantitative environmental sciences. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in the undergraduate offerings of the Center for Quantitative Sciences program at the University of Washington, housed within the College of the Environment. The base salary range for this position is $8,000 to $11,000 per month commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include start-up funds, lump sum moving allowance and/or a relocation incentive. The academic appointment will be based in the School of Aquatic and Fisheries Sciences, the School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, or some combination of the two, depending on interests and expertise of the successful candidate. The anticipated start of the position is September 16, 2024.

The Center for Quantitative Science (CQS) houses the Quantitative Science (Q SCI) course series and undergraduate minor, as well as the Quantitative Ecology and Resource Management Interdisciplinary Graduate Program (QERM). CQS provides foundational knowledge in mathematics, statistics, computational analysis, and experimental design within an environmental and ecological sciences context, preparing students to tackle pressing environmental challenges that humanity faces. More details on the CQS can be found at https://quantitative.uw.edu/.

The successful applicant will:

1. Teach up to six courses per year (10-week quarter system) across all levels in the CQS curriculum, with a specific focus on modernizing our calculus and environmental statistics courses. Specific teaching responsibilities will consider both the candidate’s expertise and the curricular needs of the program.

2. Advance educational scholarship in the teaching program with emphasis on innovative pedagogy and attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion. This may include contributing to the growing community of pedagogical researchers within the College.

3. Play an active service role at the Unit, College, and University level, for example, by engaging in shared governance, serving on key committees, contributing to the implementation of evidence-based practices throughout the instructional program and the training and mentoring of teaching assistants.

4. Assist in mentoring an early career Lecturer in CQS to prepare them for a career in teaching.

Positive factors for consideration include but are not limited to candidates with demonstrated experience in effective teaching at the undergraduate level, quantitative environmental research, use of pedagogical innovation, and/or mentoring of undergraduates.
