Title: Assistant or Associate Professor in Atmospheric and Computer Sciences

Position Details

Position Description

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences (ATMS) and the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering (Allen School) at the University of Washington (UW) invite applications for a joint full-time, 9-month (100% FTE), tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position. Candidates at the Associate Professor level may also be considered, depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will also likely be affiliated with the UW’s eScience Institute. The proposed starting date of employment is September 16, 2024.

We anticipate that the successful candidate will utilize, develop, and advance methods in the areas of AI, machine learning, computational sensing, or data science to improve our understanding of atmospherically relevant processes.  Example applications include—but are by no means limited to—climate extremes, severe weather, sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction.

This position will be expected to engage in open-source science. This may include leading or contributing to open-source software, building, deploying and sharing reproducible workflows, or creating frameworks for open data sharing. At UW the candidate will engage with programs that build community and support training in open science practices. The successful candidate will also teach undergraduate and graduate courses and support our mission through service across ATMS and the Allen School. All UW faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences and the Paul G. Allen School, in concert with the University of Washington strive for an equitable, inclusive, and welcoming culture that values and honors diverse experiences and perspectives, that fosters the constructive expression of ideas, and that promotes intellectual curiosity, creativity, and respect. We are committed to the continued development of our diverse and collegial community of people, ideas, and approaches, which will strengthen our missions of research, education, and public outreach.

The Department of Atmospheric Sciences resides in the College of the Environment, which fosters collaborations between the faculty, staff, and students engaged in the study of environmental sciences, engineering, and the human dimensions of environmental challenges. This position will offer opportunities for interaction with researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including ecology, biology, geology, glaciology, hydrology, oceanography, global health, economics, and environmental policy.

The Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering resides in the College of Engineering, which provides a highly collegial and collaborative culture, with broad interdisciplinary research ties across campus. The Allen School offers leadership both in core computing and computer engineering research, and in research that applies computer science to solve pressing world challenges in medicine and global health, education, accessibility, developing-world technology, and others.

The eScience Institute is one of the nation's first university data science institutes, established in 2008. Our mission is to support researchers across disciplines in developing and applying advanced computational methods and tools to real world problems in data-driven research. Our data scientists engage in a variety of research and training programs. Our goal is to spread proficiency in the methods and tools of data-driven research, which in turn grows the impact of data science across engineering and scientific disciplines.

The salary range for the position will be $9,500.00-$18,000.00 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Please note that the salary range provided is a blended range of both Assistant and Associate Professor in rank.
