Position Description

The Department of English at the University of Washington, located on the lands and waters of Coast Salish peoples, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Early Modern Drama and Performance, including Shakespeare. University of Washington tenure-track faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The successful candidate will teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and will be expected to participate in service to departmental, university, and field-specific organizations.  We hope that they will also develop liaisons with our UW School of Drama and with local/regional arts organizations.

The University of Washington English major includes three coursework distribution areas -- “Historical Depth,” “Power and Difference,” and “Genre, Method, and Language” -- that serve to organize our undergraduates’ educational experience.  This position will be expected to perform research and teaching that help us fulfill our commitments in these areas. This position’s primary focus is on Early Modern Drama and Performance, including Shakespeare, and we encourage applications from scholars specializing in adjacent or related fields including Black studies, queer/trans studies, feminist studies, disability studies, early modern ideas of indigeneity, ecocritical or posthuman studies, global premodern studies, world literature, digital humanities, and power and difference more generally.

Candidates in this position will effectively engage with colleagues, students, staff, and community from a wide spectrum of backgrounds. This position has an anticipated start date of September 2024 and will have a 9-month service period. Washington State Law requires that this ad list a binding salary range. The base salary range for this position will be $9,100-$11,100 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

 

Qualifications

Applicants should have by the start of the appointment a PhD or foreign degree equivalent in English or in a related field, with teaching experience and research interests centered in Early Modern Drama and Performance, including Shakespeare. Successful candidates should demonstrate a record of innovative and effective teaching as well as student mentoring, a commitment to ongoing professional and scholarly development, and active participation in departmental, university, and/or professional service.
