The Department of Health Metrics Sciences (HMS) and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill one full-time faculty position at the Acting Assistant Professor level on the Neonatal and Child Health (NCH) team. Anticipated start is Fall 2023.

The incumbent will be a leading member of a research team developing novel data streams and methods to produce nuanced quantitative estimates of health loss due to neonatal and child health and nutrition conditions including anemia, maternal and child malnutrition, micronutrient deficiencies, and related diseases and injuries. The incumbent will place particular focus on consideration of differential epidemiology in pregnant people and consequences of these conditions for pregnancy health, fetal and neonatal outcomes, and early child development. The incumbent will have demonstrated research involving neonatal and child health, anthropometrics, comparative risk assessment, and primary data collection in related fields and corresponding track record of publication and presentation in nationally- and internationally-recognized journals and conferences.  

The incumbent will use modeling tools to produce estimates for the Global Burden of Disease and related products on an annually updated basis. This will include generation and critique of these results in light of trends in the available data and epidemiological and clinical assumptions where appropriate, determine whether adjustments to models or model assumptions should be made, and analyze results in consultation with other faculty. The incumbent is expected to present the results both internally and externally and to contribute to appropriate peer reviewed journal articles and policy reports pertaining to them. The incumbent is expected to contribute to the expansion of NCH and nutrition research at the Institute including but not limited to consultation with subject area experts around the world, engagement with external partners, expansion of the network of collaborators, and contribution to efforts of the organization to pursue a research portfolio more comprehensive in scope. 

Faculty members will also take on an important leadership role in mentoring predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. Salary and benefits are competitive and commensurate with experience.

Acting Assistant Professors in the Department of Health Metrics Sciences hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1– June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $110,004.



The successful applicants will have an MD, PhD, or foreign equivalent in medicine, epidemiology, population health, health metrics, biostatistics, public health, health informatics, health economics, health policy, or other relevant subject. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in health metrics including statistical modeling using and synthesizing multiple and large data sets.
