The University of Washington (UW) Tacoma invites applications for a Part-Time Lecturer of Musicology in the Division of Culture, Arts, and Communication (CAC) within the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (SIAS).  This is a part-time position with a 9-month service period and will begin September 16, 2023. The successful candidate will teach 5 or more courses in the areas of music appreciation and musical history in the 2023-24 academic year (≥56% FTE). These courses will include: TARTS 120 – Music Appreciation; TARTS 220 – Exploring Classical Music in Our Community; TARTS 225 – Musical History of Tacoma, TARTS 160 – Introduction to American Musical Theater, and others (see Qualifications section below). Courses will be distributed across three academic quarters with no more than three courses assigned in any single quarter. This position is renewable, contingent on funding and curricular need. The course load/FTE for reappointments may be variable across the years and will be established in the Spring quarter preceding each academic year.

Positive factors for consideration include but are not limited to: expertise in the areas of music and community and/or music and social identity, and those with experience teaching online or hybrid courses. Experience in Musical Direction for theater production is desirable, but not required.

The base salary range for this position will be $583 per month for 9-months per 5-credit course (11% FTE) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Qualifications

This position requires an earned MA, MS, MM, or PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Music or a closely related field at the time of appointment. The successful candidate will be a dynamic teacher with a strong record of teaching excellence. Candidates should have experience and interest in teaching lower and upper division undergraduate courses in Music, such as: TARTS 120 – Music Appreciation; TARTS 220 – Exploring Classical Music in Our Community; TARTS 225 – Musical History of Tacoma; TARTS 311 – History of Rock & Roll; and TARTS 315 – Music and Crisis. The successful applicant will have been the instructor of record for at least two sections of courses similar to one or more of those listed here.
