Position Description

The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in physical oceanography as part of a NASA-funded project investigating the dynamics of mesoscale ocean eddies as observed by a series of satellite altimeters.  Specifically, the postdoctoral investigator will be working with along-track observations to test hypotheses regarding eddy generation, maintenance, and shape.  The researcher will work directly with the Principal Investigators of this project (Peter Gaube of APL–UW, Jeffrey Early of NorthWest Research Associates, and Jonathan Lilly of the Planetary Science Institute).  The specifics of the research project will be designed together by the postdoc and  the Principal Investigators.

In addition to disseminating results at major conferences and in peer-reviewed journals, postdocs are encouraged and mentored in writing grant proposals. A notable feature of APL postdoc positions is the ability to submit grant proposals as PIs under supervision, with the goal of establishing an independent research program and career path. 

The postdoc will be based at the University of Washington – Seattle Campus with the possibility for hybrid telework arrangement. The start date is expected within calendar year 2023 and the duration of appointment is 2 years (24 months).

Salary range: The salary range for this position will be $5,460 to $6,000 per month ($65,520 - $72,000 annual salary), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Qualifications

The position is open to capable doctoral recipients in research fields including oceanography, earth sciences, physics, applied math and many other related fields; degrees not in the list above will also be considered. Candidates must have completed the Ph.D. degree requirements within 1 year of the start date. 

Candidates should have experience in analyzing observations and/or model data in addition to expertise in geophysical fluid dynamics. Demonstrated experience with Python, Matlab, or other programming languages is a prerequisite for this position. Ability to communicate scientific results to both broad and expert audiences, orally and in writing, is indispensable to both this position and any subsequent appointments at APL-UW.

University of Washington postdoctoral scholar appointments are for a temporary, defined period not to exceed five years/60 months, including any previous postdoctoral experiences.
