The University of Washington (UW) Department of Family Medicine (DFM) has a unique opportunity to join the Department’s nationally acclaimed Research Section. We invite applications for a full-time associate professor or professor rank (without tenure due to funding) to join an exciting and growing Research Section with long established successes in the areas of health workforce and rural health. The UW is a recognized leader in primary care, family medicine, and rural medicine by U.S. News and World Report, in part due to the long-standing research relevance and productivity of the Department of Family Medicine’s Research Section in both primary care and rural health.

The UW DFM is the home of the Center for Health Workforce Studies (CHWS), founded in 1998, whose mission is to elevate the importance of the health workforce in policy discussions. UW CHWS is funded by multiple grants and contracts from a variety of federal, state, private and other sources. UW CHWS is the home of two multi-year, multi-million dollar HRSA cooperative agreement Health Workforce Research Center (HWRC) grants in the areas of (1) allied health workforce and (2) health equity in the health workforce. Our multidisciplinary team spanning the University conducts research on the preparation, recruitment, and retention of a broad range of health care workers including those in behavioral health, oral health, allied health, long-term care, nursing, and medicine. Other priority research focus areas include issues of workforce diversity and the role of health care workers in addressing health equity.

UW CHWS faculty and staff also work closely with the co-located WWAMI Rural Health Research Center (RHRC), with a mission to improve and sustain rural health through research that engages policymakers, planners, and practitioners advancing equity in rural access to care. The WWAMI RHRC has been continuously funded since 1988 by a multi-year cooperative agreement grant from the U.S. Health Resources & Services Administration and other sources. The rural health workforce is a key focus area of the WWAMI RHRC. The overlapping and complementary interests of the WWAMI RHRC and UW CHWS create a uniquely rich and synergistic multidisciplinary environment in which to thrive as a researcher.

Associate Professors and Professors (Without Tenure) hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The base salary range for this position will be: $5,753 - $21,121 per month ($69,036 - $253,452 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

The successful applicant will be in the Regular Track: Clinician Scientist/Faculty Scientist Pathway (open to both clinicians and non-clinicians: see requirements below). The expected start date is July 1, 2023, or soon thereafter.

The primary responsibility of this faculty position is to advance health workforce research both regionally and nationally by securing external research funding and translating findings effectively to policy makers and other stakeholders. This position was created as part of succession planning with opportunity to assume future leadership within the UW CHWS. This position will also work closely and collaboratively with WWAMI RHRC, Research Section faculty, the Department of Family Medicine, and external collaborators to build a strong program of research advancing our strategic missions.

Other duties expected of the successful applicant will include mentoring and training professional staff research scientists as well as residents, fellows, students, and/or non-research faculty, and service to the department, school, and university.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank.

Applicants must have:

  • a PhD in a relevant field, or foreign equivalent; an MD or DO (or foreign equivalent) is also acceptable,
  • a record of leading externally funded research projects,
  • a publication record in health services research journals,
  • demonstrated skills in advanced quantitative and/or qualitative methods,
  • expertise in managing and analyzing complex survey or claims datasets
  • research expertise in health workforce and health equity,
  • interests in health professional education and career pathways, workforce diversity, behavioral health, oral health, rural health, and/or other topics of health care access.

Candidates who wish to engage in clinical practice in the Department of Family Medicine must also meet the following requirements:

  • Have a license or be license-eligible in Washington State
  • Be board-certified or -eligible by the American Board of Family Medicine
  • To be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S.) medical schools who wish to practice must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services."
