The Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington invites applications for a full-time Research Assistant Professor in Seismo-geodesy. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in research on the use of geodesy to address transient and hazardous geophysical processes such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and landslides. Research will include a combination of both self-directed inquiry and work supporting the mission of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN).  We are particularly interested in candidates whose research involves high-rate and real-time geodetic measurements to tackle research in earthquake early warning (EEW) and subduction zone science in general, including operationalization of research products for hazard mitigation. Teaching opportunities may arise in the form of lectures, seminars, mentoring, and lab instruction.

The candidate chosen for this position will be expected to secure external grant funding for their research. The appointment is not tenure eligible and has an annual service period of twelve months. The starting date of employment is anticipated to be March 1, 2023.

The Department of Earth and Space Sciences resides in the College of the Environment, which fosters collaborations among faculty, staff, and students. This position will offer opportunities for interaction with researchers in a wide range of disciplines, including planetary surface processes, petrology, astrobiology, glaciology, oceanography, and chemistry.

The UW is located in the greater Seattle metropolitan area, with a dynamic, multicultural community of nearly 4 million people and a range of ecosystems from mountains to ocean. The UW serves a diverse population of 80,000 students, faculty and staff (including 25% first-generation college students, over 25% Pell Grant students, and faculty from over 70 countries).

The base salary range for this position will be $9,000 to $12,500 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Other compensation associated with this position may include a moving allowance, a relocation incentive, and/or limited commitment of summer salary.

A Ph.D. or foreign equivalent in Earth Sciences or related field and a strong research record are required, with a track record of publishing in top journals and giving presentations at conferences and workshops.
