Position Description

The Shah Lab is hiring enthusiastic postdoctoral fellows to study host immune responses to tuberculosis in our lab. We are interested in understanding the mechanisms of immunopathology and protection to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. We combine observations made in human populations using genetic or transcriptional approaches with detailed mechanistic studies in small animal models. A major focus of the lab is the relationship between the integrated stress response, a cellular adaptation to harsh environmental conditions, and TB immune pathology and spread.

Specific lines of inquiry include:

  • Preclinical evaluation of novel integrated stress response inhibitors as TB therapy
  • Understanding the effects of the integrated stress response on macrophage, dendritic cell, and T cell function in the granuloma
  • Describing the effect of the integrated stress response on granuloma structure using spatial immunology techniques (fluorescence microscopy and imaging mass cytometry)
  • Dissecting the genetic determinants of stress induced Mtb susceptibility:

The candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to one or more projects, learning advanced cytometry, cellular and molecular immunology techniques, and/or computational immunology. 

This is a full-time position with a 12 months service period (July 1 - June 30) with the possibility for yearly renewal dependent upon performance and continued funding. The start date for this position would be Spring/Summer 2023.

Postdoctoral scholars are represented by UAW 4121 and are subject to the collective bargaining agreement, unless agreed exclusion criteria apply. For more information, please visit the University of Washington Labor Relations website.

The Shah Lab is located on the University of Washington’s South Lake Union campus, near the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Seattle Children’s Research Institute, among other major partners in Seattle’s global health “hub.”  Dr. Shah is supported by grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and Veterans’ Health Administration. 

Qualifications

Ideal candidate must have a PhD degree (or foreign equivalent) in Immunology, Biology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, or a closely related discipline. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of experience in laboratory-based research and/or modeling/simulation and have published several first author papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The work is highly collaborative, so excellent written and oral communication skills are required as is the ability to handle multiple projects and priorities with exceptional organizational and time management skills.
