Position Description

The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, University of Washington, seeks a full-time academic Anatomic Pathologist. The clinical responsibilities include the GU pathology service at Harborview, the autopsy service, participation in intra-departmental conferences (including QA, teaching and clinical conferences) and extradepartmental conferences (including multidisciplinary GU conferences and GU tumor boards), and teaching and administrative activities, as determined by the service chief and the chief of Anatomic Pathology.

The GU service includes handling and providing diagnoses of surgical specimens including rapid intra-operative consultation and clinical supervision of staff and trainees (fellows, residents, medical students). Additional responsibilities include evening and weekend on call rapid consultation (frozen section and intra-operative consultation), participation in other genitourinary pathology activities – GU service planning sessions, and daily GU case-based consensus conferences (either in person or by telepathology).

Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to, competence/expertise in a Pathology subspecialty; experience in research (basic, translational or clinical); training in current areas of growth in GU pathology (including informatics, use of artificial intelligence, molecular diagnostics, and digital pathology with image analysis).

The candidate selected for this position may also be considered for the True-Brown Endowed Chair Professorship, at the discretion of the donor. The individual chosen for this position will be expected to enhance the University's ability to recruit and retain faculty focused on diagnostic pathology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the School of Medicine, and secondarily to provide strategic support for the School of Medicine in alignment with the stated purpose. Positive factors for consideration for the endowed chair professorship include, but are not limited to, experience as an active physician-scientist with practice and research expertise in specialized areas of pathology including, but not limited to, anatomic pathology.

This appointment may be at the rank of Assistant, Associate or full Professor, without tenure due to reasons of funding. Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank.

The base salary range for this position will be: Assistant Professors: $18,170 to $21,807 per month ($218,039 to $261,688 annually); Associate Professors: $21,903 to $25,696 per month ($262,831 to $308,357 annually); Professors: $26,023 to $31,796 per month ($312,274 to $381,547 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization. 

Assistant Professors WOT are eligible for multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Associate and Full Professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This is a full-time, 12-month service period (July 1 – June 30) position and remains open until filled with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2023, but is flexible.

The successful candidate must have subspecialty expertise in Genitourinary (GU) pathology. Candidates must have an M.D. or D.O. (or foreign equivalent) and be Board-eligible or -certified in Anatomic Pathology. Must qualify for a license to practice medicine in Washington State. In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S,) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
