Position Description

The University of Washington (UW) Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is offering an outstanding opportunity for a physician-scientist with a focus on spinal cord injury rehabilitation. The position will include a major research component, as well as teaching and clinical components. 

The successful candidate will join our excellent faculty in the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine with an academic appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor (without tenure due to source of funding), in the clinician-scientist pathway. This will be a full-time appointment. Associate Professors and Professors hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and are paid for 11 months of service over that 12-month period, meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

The physiatrist will have the opportunity to provide rehabilitative care for patients with spinal cord injury at Harborview Medical Center and/or the University of Washington-Montlake campus rehabilitation programs. Through the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, there will be opportunities to teach physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residents from our strong residency program, as well as to engage with UW colleagues in other academic activities (e.g., research collaborations, Grand Rounds).

This position practices in a collaborative and multidisciplinary academic environment.

All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service.

The base salary range for this position will be: Associate Professors WOT $18,333 - $22,584 per month ($219,996 - $271,008 annually), Professors WOT $23,083 - $25,275 per month ($276,996 - $303,300 annually), commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization. Other compensation associated with this position may include any of the following, if applicable: incentive through UW Physicians (UWP), moving allowance, relocation incentive.

RESPONSIBILITIES DETAIL

Research: 

  • Conduct research as both a principal investigator as well as collaborator
  • Develop and maintain a funded research program
  • Manuscript preparation and presentation at national or international meetings
  • Provide research supervision and mentorship to trainees and graduate students

 

Clinical:

  • Provide a full range of PM&R-specific evaluations to diagnose and treat people with spinal cord injuries and other related conditions.
  • Primary clinical responsibilities will include outpatient clinic and/or inpatient rehabilitation care of patients with spinal cord injury depending on the specific interest of the successful candidate and the clinical needs of the system[JF3] 
  • Develop, implement, and document the PM&R treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders. 
  • Function independently as a member of the UW/HMC medical staff, with full clinical privileges. 
  • Assume complete professional responsibility for his/her clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions and documentation. 
  • Provide education to patients, family members and significant others. 
  • Comply with all electronic medical records system documentation procedures, including timeliness of standards for documentation and proper patient checkout procedures. 
  • Maintain certification and licensure in the medical specialty. 
  • Provide care that is compassionate, appropriate, and effective for health problems and that promotes health. 

Teaching and Training: 

  • Provide clinical supervision and instruction (including didactic instruction) for PM&R Residents, as well as medical students as assigned. 
  • Provide teaching and mentoring of graduate students and other research trainees.
  • Provide education to professional staff. 
  • Participate in educational programs, may provide presentations at local- and national-level conference and educational events. 
  • Participate at a local, regional or national level in subspecialty societies or patient organizations. 
  • Continuously seek to develop and implement best practices in the section and Medical Center, as appropriate. 
  • Investigate and evaluate patient care practices, appraise and assimilate scientific evidence and improve their practice of medicine.  

Administrative: 

  • Provide leadership in development of team process for assigned rehabilitation program and clinical teams. 
  • Adhere to operational policies and procedures for assigned program, while staying abreast of current Medical Center policies. 
  • Monitor effectiveness of clinical programs through quality improvement processes and ongoing program evaluation. 
  • Comply with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screenings and completion of clinical reminders for all patients. 
  • Facilitate liaisons with other health care programs to develop ongoing relationships with stakeholders to effectively coordinate service or patient care. 
  • Attend and participate in administrative and informal meetings held by the service line director or designee. 

The anticipated start date may be as early as the first quarter of  2023, subject to timely approvals and credentialing.

Qualifications

  • Medical degree (MD, DO, or foreign equivalent) resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. 
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The academic appointment requires that the incumbent hold or be eligible for all licenses and certifications required to practice in the state of Washington.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training in an accredited course specialty training program leading to board certification. Approved residencies are (1) those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), or (2) those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or (3) other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. 
  • Completed residency training in an accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) program leading to board certification by the American Board of PM&R.
  • Completed fellowship training in spinal cord injury.
  • Knowledge, skill, and experience in spinal cord injury rehabilitation. 
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.  

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S,) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
