Position Description

The University of Washington’s Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine, is seeking applicants for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position to be based at Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake), UWMC-Northwest (UWMC-NW), or the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS). This position will include the role of Associate Division Head for Hospital Medicine. In addition to the leadership role, this position will include serving as a hospitalist with direct patient care duties, and teaching and precepting residents and students.

This position will be at the Associate Professor or full Professor rank (without tenure due to funding). Salary and academic appointment at University of Washington will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and academic rank. Associate and full professors WOT hold indefinite appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research and service. The anticipated start date would be July 1, 2023.

The Associate Division Head for Hospital Medicine serves as the administrative, clinical, and academic leader of hospital medicine physicians within the Division of General Internal Medicine, Department of Medicine.

Key responsibilities related to clinical leadership include:

  • High-level oversight and coordination of patient care activities of the hospitalist program at HMC, UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, and VAPSHCS
  • Development of infrastructure for the program, e.g., scheduling, policies, clinical performance standards, staffing levels
  • Articulating the long-term vision for hospital medicine, including overall mission and strategy for patient care, academic endeavors, recruitment, retention, and faculty recognition
  • Ensuring that physicians are appropriately trained in billing practices, overall documentation, and the basics of quality improvement and patient safety
  • Working with senior leaders in the division, Department of Medicine, hospitals, IM Residency, UW Medicine, and School of Medicine to ensure and advocate for financial and logistical support for hospitalists, integration with hospital initiatives, and coordination with teaching programs
  • With division head, coordinating the recruitment and on-boarding of physician and support personnel

Primary operational responsibility for the hospital medicine programs at UWMC-Montlake, UWMC-NW, HMC, and VAPSHCS would continue to reside with the respective service directors who supervise day-to-day activities of personnel assigned to their programs.

Key responsibilities related to academic and administrative leadership include:

  • Promoting the faculty development programs in the hospital medicine program and coordinating with the director of GIM Faculty Development Programs, the Academic Research Coach, and the leadership in relevant centers for scholarship (CLIME, WISH, and the UW Center for Scholarship in Patient Care Quality and Safety) to support the faculty
  • Ensuring that faculty members have opportunity to receive effective mentorship and peer interaction that enables them to be professionally successful and become effective teachers
  • Leading strategic planning efforts related to new programs and initiatives
  • Oversight of the Hospital Medicine Program operations budget
  • Shared oversight of the Hospital Medicine faculty budget, merit assignment, financial planning, and revenue cycle with the division head and division administrators
  • Establishing and helping to maintain Division-wide performance standards for hospital medicine
  • Meeting with individual faculty members on a regular basis to determine if they are on track with expectations of their development in the areas of teaching, scholarly and patient care
  • Enhancing collaboration among hospital medicine faculty at different hospitals and among research centers within UW Medicine
  • Participating in the annual review process for hospital medicine faculty and assisting in the refinement of promotion criteria specific to hospital medicine and full-time clinical faculty.

Salary

The base salary range for this position will be: $18,334 - $20,000 per month ($220,000 - $240,000 annually) for the Associate Professor rank or $20,000 - $22,917 per month ($240,000 - $275,000 annually) for the Professor rank, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. This range is inclusive of base salary provided through the UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan, in addition to base salary provided by the University. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations. Compensation provided by UW Physicians (UWP) practice plan may provide eligibility for separate benefits offered by that organization.

Other Compensation

Other compensation associated with this position will include (1) an administrative salary supplement for administrative service as Associate Division Head and (2) a pay supplement (TPS) of $6,250 - 7,084 per month ($75,000 - 85,000 annually) for work on the hospital medicine service. TPS amounts are based on appointment FTE and clinical FTE (cFTE) at the time of hire.

Other compensation associated with this position may include incentive through UW Physicians practice plan.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an MD or DO degree (or foreign equivalent) and board certification in Internal Medicine (or foreign equivalent). Board certification in Internal Medicine must be completed within two years after residency.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H-1B visa, graduates of foreign (non-U.S,) medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
