Every year, UW faculty and librarians are awarded prestigious fellowships, which provide opportunities to enhance their research and teaching. These experiences often require the recipient to be in residence elsewhere and to temporarily step back from their normal UW duties. Recipients are often expected to engage in specific activities and may receive a salary stipend, travel/housing allowance, commitment of office/research space, or some other form of compensation or access. UW faculty and librarians participate in fellowships concurrent with an approved
sabbatical or through a separate approved
leave of absence.
UW has policies that limit, prohibit, and/or require pre-approval for certain outside activities including, but not limited to, those involving teaching at other institutions or outside compensation (including in-kind). As such, the Office of Research advises fellowship recipients to follow UW’s
Outside Professional Work for Compensation approval process. This process will help ensure UW faculty and librarians are in compliance with institutional policy and help protect them from penalties associated with violating certain provisions of the
Washington State Public Ethics Law.
Unit administrators should point fellowship recipients to the
Office of Research website for access to the Outside Work form, details on the approval process, and related policies; and to OAP’s
Sabbatical Leave web page, which has been updated to include a note about fellowships.
