Promotion and tenure (P&T) season is well underway. In preparation for 2021-22 P&T record submission, campus partners should run the new Workday report R0722: Academic Promotion/Tenure Data Issues, which helps identify issues that need to be corrected prior to the submission deadline.
OAP recently completed an analysis of all P&T records submitted in 2020-21. The most frequent reason for contacting units about a candidate’s record was related to peer and student evaluations of teaching. This documentation is essential and required for making promotion and/or tenure recommendations for all faculty members whose track/rank/title and/or duties include instructional responsibilities. The evaluations are required elements on the OAP
P&T promotion checklist.
Peer Teaching Evaluations
A peer teaching evaluation is a review conducted by a faculty member of another faculty member’s teaching performance, course content, and/or other activities that contribute to the unit’s curriculum or teaching program. Each evaluation must include a written summary with the evaluator’s name and evaluation date. The faculty member who was evaluated must receive a copy and a copy must be added to their departmental personnel file.
Faculty Code Section 24-57 A requires that peer teaching evaluations be conducted on the following schedule:
- Every academic year for assistant professors, associate professors tenure-track, professors tenure-track, and artists in residence.
- At least once every three academic years for associate professors.
Note: All faculty must have a peer teaching evaluation in the academic year immediately preceding the academic year of their promotion review. It is not too late to complete peer teaching evaluations in fall quarter 2021. We strongly recommend that campus partners reach out to candidates as soon as possible to ensure these requirements are met by the time P&T records are due to AHR.
Student Evaluations of Teaching
Each P&T record should also have student evaluations of teaching for each academic year a course is taught. To read more about P&T record materials, visit
