Join our growing team of Certified Nurse Midwives and Ob/Gyn physicians at University of Washington Medical Center - Northwest in Seattle, WA. We are currently seeking a full scope Certified Nurse Midwife to join our midwifery practice at 0.8 FTE. Teaching associates hold annual appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30) and may be reappointed to subsequent annual terms. Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. The anticipated start date for this position is November 1, 2022.
UW Medical Center - Northwest is a full-service, non-profit, hospital, with 281 beds, on a patient-friendly, easy-access campus in north Seattle. Our campus has the size and character of a smaller community hospital, but as part of the University of Washington Medical Center, the top-rated hospital in Washington State, we have access to all the resources of a leading academic medical center. We have a newly renovated birthing unit with spacious rooms with large labor tubs. We are Baby Friendly certified. Our midwives have an excellent, respectful relationship with our OB-GYN colleagues. We work with an amazing team of nurses who support physiologic birth and practice truly patient-centered care. We are a smallish birthing facility, but with 24/7 in-house OB, neonatology, and OB anesthesia.

Position Responsibilities
- Provide full-scope midwifery care in an all-CNM practice group, including independent management of OB-GYN care focusing primarily on pregnancy, birth, and postpartum as well as family planning, gynecological and primary care of women.
- Practice within UW academic healthcare system that provides for consultation, collaborative management, or referral to obstetrics, perinatology, and other specialties as indicated by client health status
- Manage hospital labor assessment and admission, normal and abnormal labor, cervical ripening and labor induction, vaginal birth, including VBAC, postpartum care and discharge of mothers and newborns.
- Manage the inpatient care of mother-baby couplets in a manner that supports parental bonding and initiation of breast/chest feeding (or alternative infant feeding as desired).
- Perform vaginal birth and laceration repair, limited 1st, 2nd and 3rd trimester OB ultrasounds as appropriate to training and experience, C-section first surgical assist, and IUD and subdermal contraceptive implant insertion and removal.
- Maintain medical records according to community standards of practice.
- Assist in training midwife students, medical students, and residents in outpatient and inpatient settings
Candidates will be expected to provide medical services at the University of Washington affiliated hospitals, train residents, and medical students, and make academic contributions to the field.

Qualifications
Education (a foreign equivalent is acceptable)
- Masters or Doctorate Degree in Nurse-Midwifery or Midwifery required.
Licensure, Registration, Certification (a foreign equivalent is acceptable)
- Current CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) certification
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) License for the State of Washington
- Current Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) license for the State of Washington with prescriptive authority
- CPR/BLS certification
- Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) certification (active within 3 months of hire.)
- DEA registration
Work Experience
- experience as a full scope midwife, including newborn care and C-section first assist preferred but not required
- previous training or experience with OB ultrasound preferred, but not required
- experience teaching in healthcare setting is preferred but not required
Special Training/Skills
- Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age and acuity of the patients served by the assigned unit/department or clinic.
- Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and Outlook.
- Ability to learn and work comfortably with electronic medical record (EPIC training will be provided)
- Ability to appropriately counsel and educated patients and families about complex care issues via phone or in person.
- Able to effectively and respectfully communicate and collaborate with midwife partners and others, including but not limited to physicians, management, nursing, and support staff
- Teaching skills and ability to give appropriate positive and constructive feedback
- Flexibility in responding to needs of clinic schedule, practice partners, and patients
Physical Demand Level: Medium
- Must be able to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to move freely throughout the clinic and hospital.
- In an 8-hour workday, must be able to Lift / Carry:
- 20 to 50 pounds occasionally
- 10 to 25 pounds frequently
- up to 10 pounds constantly
- As required, must be able to:
- Sit, Stand, Walk, Bend, Squat, Kneel, Crawl, Climb and Reach above shoulders

- Perform fine motor functions
- Must possess functional vision, hearing, and speech in order to communicate effectively with clients, client advocates, and staff.
