Position Description

The Computing and Software Systems (CSS) Division of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) seek to fill multiple positions for Lecturer Part-Time faculty in our Interactive Media Design (IMD) Program. A commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate level is essential, as is a commitment to support and enhance learning for diverse populations.  We are seeking multiple candidates to join our faculty on a part-time basis (50% - 100%) for a 9-month service period with opportunities to teach during the summer.  Positions in this title are non-tenure track and not promotion eligible.  Appointments in these positions may be for multiple years (1-5 years).  Reappointments are contingent upon instructional needs, performance and funding. The position has an expectation of teaching between five and eight courses in the three quarters of the regular academic year with teaching assignments focused on IMD. Critical topics for these courses include but are not limited to design mindsets, principles, and practices relating to community-based design, human-centered design, social justice design, design for difference, and speculative design; new media art; feminist and queer theory; project management and collaborative group work; personas; creative coding; and physical computing.

The successful candidates will be dynamic scholars, educators, and artists/designers/makers whose work bridges theory and practice of interactive media and design thinking, with expertise in designing and making technology-mediated interactive media experiences. The successful candidates will bring a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to interaction design, experience with team-based studio practices, and will work closely and adaptively with faculty colleagues overseeing the IMD program to ensure coherence across and between courses. The ideal candidate will have expertise teaching and design approaches that address or account for the ways that race, gender, sexuality, and ability are co-constituted. PhD, MDes, or MFA are desirable, though may be substituted by appropriate pedagogical and work experience.

We offer twenty-three undergraduate and graduate degrees and eight minors across four Divisions (Biological Sciences, Computing and Software Systems, Engineering and Mathematics, Physical Sciences). The School is housed in several buildings on a vibrant campus collocated on a restored 100-acre wetland with an active salmon stream, including the 74,000 square-foot Discovery Hall teaching and laboratory facility, with a new 77,000 square-foot STEM building in collaboration with Cascadia College opening in Fall 2023.

Qualifications

  • PhD, MDes, or MFA or foreign equivalent are desirable, though degree may be substituted by appropriate pedagogical and work experience
  • Demonstrated ability to teach a wide variety of IMD courses
  • Demonstrated potential to support the UW Bothell mission and STEM core values, including the values of diversity and equal opportunity
